Barely two months after he was hit with a $25,000 (roughly £19,000) fine for nearly hitting a ball person when he smashed his racket at the Indian Wells Open and fined another $35,000 for his meltdown at the Miami Open, Nick Kyrgios again lost his cool during his semifinal clash with Andy Murray at the Boss Open on Stuttgart. After dropping the first set in his Stuttgart Open semi-final against Andy Murray, Nick Kyrgios was given a point and a game penalty in short succession. The Brit’s victory in the first-set tiebreak elicited a vehement reaction, which was met with retaliation.
Andy Murray took the opening point of the tiebreak after a closely contested first set before Kyrgios smashed the net to increase his lead, earning a warning for ball violation shortly after for smashing a ball in rage. Later in the tiebreak, the dynamic Australian fought back, pulling the score back to 4-4, but he couldn’t maintain his consistency, and Murray won 7-5.
Murray walked to his courtside bench, and Kyrgios broke his racket for a point penalty, allowing his rage to get the best of him. Kyrgios’ unhappy first-set finish spilled over into a catastrophic second-set start. With a double-fault, the Brit went on to break him in the first game. Nick Kyrgios didn’t settle down after that and continued to publicly show his fury, earning him another game penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, and giving Murray a two-game lead. As a result, the Australian proceeded to quarrel with the umpire, which isn’t something quite new for him to do.
“I understand that my behaviour isn’t the best all the time”- Nick Kyrgios
Australia’s controversial tennis star Nick Kyrgios, who has been embroiled in on-court controversies lately, has revealed that ‘racial slurs’ and furious insults from the audience affected his mental stability and those are the reason for his on-court outburst against Andy Murray at Stuttgart. He took to his Instagram story to reveal the truth. He wrote, “When is this going to stop, dealing with racial slurs from the crowd? I understand that my behaviour isn’t the best all the time- but ‘You little black sheep’, ‘Shut up and play’, little comments like this are not acceptable. When I retaliate to the crowd, I get penalized. This is messed up.”
