The discussion surrounding the use of steroids in combat sports has been ongoing for many years, drawing skepticism about drug testing protocols. As the top MMA promotion in the world, UFC has encountered fighters testing for PEDs and steroids. The promotion has always promised to maintain strict policies against steroid usage, aiming to ensure fairness and fighter safety in events.

However, there are some loopholes in the system, which Gordon Ryan recently mentioned in a post about anti-doping regulations. Ryan is one of the most popular Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experts in the world and holds multiple world championship titles under his belt.

The BJJ superstar has been openly admitting to using steroids for a long time and recently explained how top UFC athletes avoid testing. He also mentioned how these practices create an uneven battleground, giving superstars an unfair advantage over new fighters in competitions.

Those (new fighters) guys won’t have the resources or the money to hire the doctors necessary to beat the test. So those guys are natural. The guys at the top who are making millions of dollars, those guys will always have the resources and money available to them to hire the doctors to help them beat the test. And the whole purpose of steroid testing is so that you don’t have natural athletes competing against unnatural athletes. But you get that anyways.

Ryan has remained very vocal for years, consistently highlighting how numerous top-level athletes secretly benefit from using performance-enhancing steroids. According to him, some fighters fully understand how testing windows function and cleverly adjust their intake schedules to avoid detection. After all, fighters like Paulo Costa and Kamaru Usman were accused of taking enhancers in the past.

Gordon Ryan further explained that elite competitors were aware of how long substances remain inside the human body and strategically discontinue usage. This strategy enables fighters to maximize steroids’ benefits, including faster recovery, superior strength, and endurance, while still avoiding getting caught.

However, Ryan has consistently been an advocate for steroid usage, especially in tournaments that legally allow them without restrictions. The expert believes legalization ensures fairness across athletes and would make fights more entertaining, as competitors perform at higher levels.

UFC champion slams fighters who use steroids

Over the years, numerous UFC athletes have been caught using steroids, sparking widespread debates about fairness and fighter safety. Brock Lesnar was famously suspended after failing two drug tests before UFC 200, which cast a major shadow over his much-hyped return to the promotion.

Alistair Overeem also faced scrutiny after testing positive for elevated testosterone levels before his canceled heavyweight title fight against Junior dos Santos. MMA’s ‘Bad Guy’ Chael Sonnen, known for his trash talk, was repeatedly flagged for PEDs, leading to suspensions and damaging his professional MMA reputation.

Anderson Silva and TJ Dillashaw both tested positive, shocking fans worldwide, as their legacies were significantly tarnished by steroid controversies. The current UFC heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall, once talked about why steroids have no place in combat sports.

If your job is to physically hurt another person, which could potentially redirect the rest of their lives, you’re an absolute piece of sh*t and you should never be able to fight again if you have any PED stuff…It’s like taking a gun to a knife fight. How can you look yourself in the mirror when you know that you’re cheating. You could potentially damage the other person for life. It’s disgusting.

Back then, Aspinall was linked to a potential heavyweight title fight with Jon Jones but dismissed ‘Bones’ as MMA’s GOAT. Jones has twice failed PEDs tests during his career, including clomiphene and turinabol, which resulted in suspensions and title-stripping consequences.

These controversies have consistently overshadowed Jones’ achievements and forever tainted his legacy. Moreover, fans always bring up the failed drug tests to discredit Jones as well in GOAT debates.
