Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys haven’t won a Super Bowl for nearly thirty years, last won a playoff game in the 2022-23 season, and are 1-2 under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. And yet, the Cowboys’ esteemed owner believes his team possesses the necessary tools to play postseason football.

The Cowboys faced off against the Chicago Bears in week three. Both teams played divisional rivals in week 2 and had different outcomes.

Dallas came away with an overtime win against the New York Giants, while the Bears suffered a blowout loss to the Detroit Lions. This was the best time for the Cowboys to sneak a win at Soldier Field, and Vegas showed its approval, making Jerry’s team -3.5 point favorites.

It was a different story during the game. Quarterback Dak Prescott took nearly eight minutes in the second quarter to throw a touchdown pass to George Pickens. Caleb Williams had thrown two TDs by that point to Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III.

Brandon Aubrey’s field goals kept the Cowboys in the game. However, a kicker can only do so much if the offense can’t score TDs and the defense is conceding points at regular intervals.

Williams threw more TD passes on either side of halftime to tight end Cole Kmet and DJ Moore to secure a 14-31 victory and their first win of the Ben Johnson era.

After the game, the media gathered around Jones and asked if the Cowboys could still qualify for the playoffs after failing to do so in 2024. Jones replied that he has faith in his team and the quarterback.

I will tell you, yes. It’s because you saw No. 4 [Dak Prescott] out there today, and you saw what we’re capable of doing in the run game… As we evolve toward the playoffs, we have to get better defensively. Certainly.

Prescott threw over 250 yards in consecutive games but conceded two turnovers and was subsequently benched in favor of Joe Milton, who also threw a pick in the final moments.

Tom Brady had a great vantage point to observe from inside the FOX booth. The retired quarterback-turned-announcer highlighted Micah Parsons’ absence behind the Cowboys’ lackluster defense.

There’s not enough guys in the rush, and certainly no coverage. Another wide-open receiver. Matt Eberflus is just looking for answers over there. Not rushing well, not covering well, not knowing their way on defense.

Of course, Parsons was traded away before the start of the season. Kenny Clark, whom the Cowboys received in the Parsons trade, has been solid, but not at the same level as Parsons.

The Cowboys also acquired two first-round picks, which Jones implied will be used in due time.

To use that capital, you’ve got to have the opportunity to use it. And frankly, no matter what I had seen in these first three ball games, if I had the opportunity to really do some good with those picks, I would do it. And we’ve got them, and that’s one of the advantages for, if you will, making the trade.

Before thinking about the next draft, the Cowboys’ focus should be on winning games this year. Next week, they host the Green Bay Packers and prepare for the return of Parsons.
