10-man Bayern Munich thrash Stuttgart 4-0 as Lewandowski bags hat-trick
Bayern Munich are one of the most feared teams in Europe and they showed exactly why, in an incredible 4-0 win over Stuttgart. Most teams when they’d go a man down as early as in the 12th minute it would be damage control but not for Hansi Flick’s Bayern Munich.
Robert Lewansdowski bagged a first-half hat trick as Bayern Munich ran over their Bundesliga rivals VfB Stuttgart in a ruthless display of attacking football. Serge Gnabry scored Bayern’s second goal before Lewandowski got in on the act.
Robert Lewandowski moved 2nd in the list of all time goal scorers in Bundesliga
Bayern’s Alphonso Davies was sent off after 12 minutes only for Lewandowski to open the scoring five minutes later. Lewandowski slid in at the near post ahead of his marker to fire home a low Serge Gnabry cross from the right flank.
Four minutes later, Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané played their way through the Stuttgart defense for Gnabry to get Bayern’s second goal. Lewandowski added the third less than 60 seconds later when he rose to head home a Mueller cross from the right.
The Polish star completed his hat trick in the 39th after being set up by Sané. Bayern took their feet off the pedal in the second half but despite their numerical disadvantage, they still dominated as Lewandowski and Gnabry missed chances to give them an even bigger win against the hapless visitors.
Stuttgart’s Saša Kalajdžić, who had scored in each of his last seven appearances, missed some good chances in the second half for the visitors.
Lewandowski’s 33rd, 34th and 35th goals of the season leave him needing just five more to match Bayern and West Germany great Gerd Müller’s Bundesliga record of 40 goals from the 1971-72 season. Lewandowski’s goals on Saturday did move him past Klaus Fischer to second in the all-time top Bundesliga scorers, behind Muller.
Bayern Munich moved 4 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table and will look to maintain this form for the rest of the season. Rb Leipzig are the only other team who have a chance of ending Bayern Munich’s dominance in the German league.
