12 top clubs agree to join European Super League; UEFA says teams will be banned from domestic leagues

European Super League

A breakaway competition called the European Super League has been in the works for quite some time now. The competition, said to feature ‘an exclusive group of the biggest clubs in Europe’, has now been agreed in principle, according to reports. As many as 12 clubs have signed up for the league already featuring the top teams from Spain, Italy and England. German and French clubs have not agreed to the same.

The 12 teams are reportedly Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid from Spain; Juventus, AC Milan and Internazionale from Italy along with England’s famed ‘Big 6’ – comprising of Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. An official announcement on this is awaited but New York Times has confirmed the news.

‘Enough is enough’ – UEFA

UEFA released a statement soon after the reports about the European Super League started to surface. It strictly condemned the creation of the league and threatened severe sanctions including banning them from domestic leagues. The statement was made along with the English FA, La Liga and Serie A.

“If this were to happen, we wish to reiterate that we – UEFA, the English FA, RFEF, FIGC, the Premier League, LaLiga, Lega Serie A, but also FIFA and all our member associations – will remain united in our efforts to stop this cynical project, a project that is founded on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever,” the statement read.

“Football is based on open competitions and sporting merit; it cannot be any other way. As previously announced by FIFA and the six Federations, the clubs concerned will be banned from playing in any other competition at domestic, European or world level, and their players could be denied the opportunity to represent their national teams,” the statement added.

The statement ended with a strong message stating that this had to be put an end to. “This persistent self-interest of a few has been going on for too long. Enough is enough.”
