No one, including Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer, was ready to digest the news that Marshawn Kneeland died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
His struggles with mental health became public when law enforcement was notified by the defensive end’s girlfriend. It was also revealed that Kneeland’s mother’s death compounded those problems.
What baffled everyone was that even the Cowboys were not privy to that side of their 2024 2nd round pick. Soon, the media started to share suicide hotline numbers, with some talking about how athletes tend to avoid such conversations.
Kneeland’s death means that his contract with the Cowboys ceases to exist. Since he did not play the requisite number of years to be eligible for pension and family health benefits, his girlfriend has found herself in a pickle.
(Catalina is) pregnant, and so we want to make sure she is taken care of and the baby is taken care of for the rest of their lives. Our guys—it’s very important to them and to us… We can all give and support Catalina.
Brian Schottenheimer said at the Cowboys’ facilities
The head coach revealed that Marshawn Kneeland’s girlfriend, Catalina Mancera is pregnant. To help her, the Cowboys have created The Marshawn Kneeland Memorial Fund.

Team personnel and players are doing their part to ensure their late teammate’s unborn heir continues to get their support. However, they are also seeking the help of fans and the general population to support their fallen player’s family.
Fans tear into Cowboys for seeking ‘funds’ to help Marshawn Kneeland’s pregnant girlfriend
Football fans were initially appreciative of the Dallas Cowboys after they decided they would help Marshawn Kneeland’s pregnant girlfriend.
However, they took offense to the franchise for creating a website in order to seek funds from the public. Considering how much the franchise is valued and Jerry Jones‘ substantial wealth, they wondered why the team would need outside assistance.
Some pointed at the millions Cowboys players and staff earned, believing any one of them could set up Catalina Mancera and her unborn child for life. Check out examples of those reactions below.
A fund? The #Cowboys are the only NFL team worth $13 billion. Jerry could find the ‘fund’ in his couch cushions. Let’s be real.

Why does the team need a go fund me when they can just pay for it?

Jerry Jones cant give a million in cash and call it a day .Ridiculous asking players and fans to contribute to a Go fund me

A fund? I think there’s enough money on that 53-man roster/ front office to take care of her and the baby for a long time.

Just give her his remaining salary

Jerry Jones is a literal billionaire but one of his employees had to start a fund 🤦🏽♂️

Go fund me? …honor one year of the contract. Convert half into a trust for child.

Jerry should put 100k in a fund that matures for the child at age 25. Another 500k to the mother and child. However the 500k is divided into equal payments until the child is 25.

Even though the Dallas Cowboys are trying to do good by their fallen player’s family, their efforts to garner funds from the public seemed a tad cheap. Fans believe the team has the resources to take care of the problem themselves.
Cowboys post tribute video to Marshawn Kneeland
When Brian Schottenheimer spoke to the media, he talked about how he misses his former player’s jovial nature. He claimed Marshawn Kneeland was the most optimistic among all the younger players on the squad.

Keeping that in mind, the Dallas Cowboys released a tribute video through their social media channels, compiling all the light-hearted moments from their former defensive end amidst a trying season.

They completed the video with snippets from the blocked punt from which he scored a touchdown just a couple of days before taking his own life. On that last note, they again added the suicide hotline number, urging anyone struggling to come forward.
