Sunday night marked one of the most unusual shows in UFC history, as seven fights were staged on the South Lawn of the White House as part of UFC Freedom 250. The event was tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations and drew attention far beyond the scope of the promotion’s usual audience. CEO Dana White later expressed his elation at the event’s performance over the weekend.

The card itself delivered a series of spectacular fights as all 7 ended in a finish. In the main event, Justin Gaethje stopped Ilia Topuria to win his first undisputed UFC title. Before that, Ciryl Gane captured interim heavyweight gold for the second time by defeating Alex Pereira in the co-main event. All in all, the event lived up to its billing as a high-profile one-off card.

This incredible event was accompanied by a gargantuan crowd whose exact figures have just been revealed by White. While the fights themselves took place on the South Lawn, people also gathered in droves in and around the White House grounds.

The turnout by the veteran promoter’s admission comprised people who knew they wouldn’t be inside the venue, but showed up anyway to be part of the experience.

We had 130,000 people on the Ellipse over Saturday and Sunday. People traveled, bought tickets knowing they weren’t going to be inside the fight, to stand in the grass and be a part of the fan experience that we had. There were 60,000 people at the weigh-ins.

The UFC Freedom 250 event has received tons of praise for its scale and production. Even veteran journalist Ariel Helwani, who has shared a contentious relationship with Dana White and has criticized his lack of promotional effort in the past, couldn’t help but praise the event’s production. The journalist was particularly entranced by newly crowned lightweight champ Justin Gaethje’s walkout.

All in all, the live crowd at the White House did not disappoint and helped add to the grandeur of UFC Freedom 250. However, the UFC CEO also revealed that it wasn’t just the fans in attendance that had turned up in droves. The 56-year-old was similarly delighted by the viewership numbers for last Sunday’s event.

Dana White claims ‘monstrous’ viewership numbers for UFC Freedom 250

The sport of MMA has made massive strides in terms of viewership over the past decade and a half. The rise of Conor McGregor, the evolution of women’s MMA and just the overall boom of the sport into the mainstream remains the key factors in said strides. That said, the recent card at the White House seemed like a culmination of that growth, with the event having a reach not afforded to most UFC cards.

As such, the viewership for the event was apparently off the charts as described by Dana White. The American promoter said that the numbers were still being crunched for the final announcement of viewership figures. Even so, the UFC boss revealed that the CEO of Paramount Skydance, David Ellison, was over the moon with how well the recent event had performed.

David Ellison called me before I went to the press conference and was just…He was just freaking out on the phone about how good this event was and how much it meant to their platform. It’s got to be pretty damn good, but we haven’t got the numbers yet. You know, they’re waiting for the replays and all that stuff, and we should have it in the next 24 hours, but they are over the top pumped.

White had alluded to Ellison being overjoyed by the ‘monstrous’ numbers at the UFC Freedom 250 post-fight press conference as well. On Sunday, the UFC CEO had admitted that the event had “exceeded expectations” from the opening fight itself. Thus, it will be interesting to see how that ends up translating to the live viewership numbers.

The fight week for UFC Freedom 250 was chaotic with UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland gatecrashing festivities at the presser, his antics only adding to the hype of the card. As such, with two double champions headlining the card in the main and co-main events, and fan favorites filling out the rest of the event, it is no surprise that the highly anticipated White House card did well.

Even so, the MMA world will need to wait till Paramount releases the official numbers to see how it fared against recent events like the inaugural MVP MMA card.

Before the event, headliner Ronda Rousey had revealed a desire to break the US viewership record which stood at 8.8 million. The numbers later released by MVP showed that she was successful as the event drew an average of 12 million viewers and peaked at 17 million.

Nonetheless, given the live viewership figures, it is not a stretch to say that this one-off night of fights was a smashing success for the UFC and Dana White.
