The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced in a statement today the qualification process for the 2022 T20 World Cup which is set to be held in Australia. The tournament will consist of 15 teams and there will be 86 teams vying for the spots. While the top ranked teams are given automatic spots based on their rankings, the associate nations will have to take part in qualifiers in order to make it to the tournament.
For the top ranked associate nations, there will be global qualifiers while for the lower ranked nations, there will be regional qualifiers held in the respective regions. There are various countries which will be taking part in the qualification process for the first time ever. Countries Hungary, Romania and Serbia will take the cricket field for the first time in a T20 World Cup qualifier. Other countries which have never hosted ICC matches will have a chance to do so with matches scheduled to be held in countries such as Finland and Japan.

Based on ICC’s latest rankings, Singapore have made it to the global qualifiers for the T20 World Cup for the first time ever. The global qualifiers will be held in Japan next year. Singapore’s ascension in the rankings means Hong Kong will drop down to the regional qualifiers and will have to take the long route to make it to the tournament in Australia.
The change in rankings is due to the fact that Hong Kong haven’t played much cricket at all over the course of the last years and since the latest rankings take into consideration results within a period of time, the nation’s previous results won’t be taken into consideration when they fall outside the time period.
Singapore will thus join the likes of Papua New Guinea (qualifier from East Asia Pacific) and Zimbabwe, Nepal and UAE in the global qualifiers. These teams will be joined by the four teams that finish bottom of the T20 World Cup in 2021 which will be held in India.
