Brian Windhorst joined the debate on the 1992 Dream Team versus the 2024 Team USA, sparked by Draymond Green’s claim that the current team would dominate the Dream Team. Windhorst reported from Paris, where he acknowledged the strength of the 2024 team but also noted the nuance required in the comparison.
Windhorst pointed out that the Dream Team had several players near the end of their careers, including Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. He suggested that while the 2024 team may have a stronger overall roster, the starting five of the Dream Team is still unbeatable.
Draymond was a little aggressive for my taste in that... Winning these next three games, to me, and how they perform in those three games will be what their case is.Brian Windhorst on ESPN’s First Take
Brian Windhorst also highlighted the depth of the 2024 team, noting that coach Steve Kerr has the luxury of benching players like Joel Embiid. Embiid was pulled from Team USA’s opening win against Serbia and watched the entire victory over South Sudan from the bench.
The Americans entered the knockout stage of the Olympic tournament as the No. 1 overall seed and faced Brazil in the quarterfinals. After a resounding victory, they will then square off with either Serbia or Australia for a spot in the final.
Draymond Green sparks debate with claim that 2024 Team USA would dominate 1992 Dream Team
Draymond Green recently shared his thoughts on the comparisons between the 2024 Team USA and the legendary 1992 “Dream Team.” The Golden State Warriors star boldly claimed that the current team would beat the Icons in five out of seven games, saying it “wouldn’t be close” and that LeBron James and Co. would win by “double digits.”
Green’s comments sparked a debate, with some arguing that the 1992 team’s experience and chemistry would give them an edge. However, P.J. Carlesimo, a member of the 1992 coaching staff, pointed out that the current Olympic team faces much stiffer competition, with 69 players from opposing teams having played in the NBA, compared to just 12 in 1992.
I wouldn’t compare them. The thing that makes it most difficult to compare [was] it was such a different time in terms of the opposition. The opposition today is so much better. There was a “fear factor,” if you will [when facing Team USA in 1992].P.J. Carlesimo on SiriusXM NBA Radio
The debate highlights the challenges of comparing teams from different eras. Green believes that the 2024 team’s versatility would be too much for the 1992 team to handle, but others argue that the Dream Team’s cohesion and experience would make them a formidable opponent.
