The qualifying rounds of the Wuhan Open are underway at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center in Wuhan, China. The main draw will start on October 6th.

It’s the final tournament of the WTA 1000 series as well as the last one on the Asian swing. Aryna Sabalenka will enter the tournament as the defending champion.

Aryna Sabalenka will headline the quarter. The World No.1 will be playing a tournament for the first time since her successful run at the US Open.

Sabalenka could meet Liudmila Samsonova in the fourth round, while in the quarterfinals, she could face four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka or 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. Apart from them, Sofia Kenin, Anna Kalinskaya, Leylah Fernandez, and Linda Noskova are also part of this draw.

Second quarter

The second quarter features players such as Amanda Anisimova, Diana Shnaider, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Jessica Pegula. Jessica Bouzas Maneiro replaced local star Qinwen Zheng because the latter re-injured her elbow during the China Open.

Third quarter

Mirra Andreeva and Coco Gauff could face each other in the last eight. The former has won two titles, while the latter has only clinched the French Open this season.

Fourth quarter

Iga Swiatek is the favorite to reach the last eight from this draw. Before arriving in Wuhan, Swiatek suffered a fourth-round exit at the China Open. She has never played the WTA 1000 event in Wuhan.

Rybakina is not playing consistent tennis, so if she reaches the quarterfinals and meets Sabalenka, the result is expected to end in the latter’s favor. Gauff won both her encounters against Andreeva this year.

Swiatek has so far played four finals, winning three titles. Sabalenka defeated Anisimova to clinch her fourth Grand Slam title at the US Open this year.

Final

Sabalenka is the favorite to win the tournament. She is also the most successful player of this tournament, winning in 2018, 2019, and last year.
