If one were to ask Jalen Williams 3 years ago if he would sign a massive $287 million contract extension, he would have probably laughed it off. But fast-forwarding three years ahead, Williams, with the OKC Thunder, has done the unthinkable and signed a massive $287 million contract extension. This comes after a series of impressive, top-notch performances for the Thunder this past 2024-25 NBA season, eventually capturing the 2025 NBA title with his side, his first-ever ring.
However, Williams has been making headlines for something else. The interesting part comes up now. After signing this massive contract extension, Williams claimed recently that he was able to retire his parents. Something truly special for him after his quick rise to the sport and in the NBA. Williams made his thoughts known in a recent interview with TMZ Sports.
It’s wild because it happened really fast, like within the span of three years, my life is completely different. I’ve been fortunate enough to retire my parents.

Williams is not wrong here because just 3 years ago he was playing collegiate basketball, and now he is an NBA champion. His on-court chemistry alongside the 2025 NBA MVP winner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was one of the main reasons the Thunder were successful in clinching the NBA title. Hence, the Thunder rewarded him with this massive contract deal.
This was a well-earned extension. During his three years in the league, Williams’ reputation has been improving. Throughout 69 games, he produced a career-high 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. For his 2024–25 season, Williams received his first All-Star and All-NBA (Third Team) selections. He was selected to the All-Defensive Second Team as well.

The primary query at this point, though, is whether Jalen Williams will be able to support his 2024–25 NBA performances in the forthcoming campaign. Williams appears to be just getting started based on the Thunder roster’s structure. Nevertheless, he will undoubtedly be under pressure for the upcoming season after landing this huge deal.
The Thunder secure Jalen Williams after giving him a huge contract extension
Jalen Williams will remain with the Thunder for many years to come, thanks to his maximum five-year contract extension (as mentioned above). The Thunder management was left impressed with Williams all season, and his postseason performances made it even better for the organization to decide regarding his contract extension.

During the Thunder’s postseason run, he took charge. Williams averaged 21.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists in 23 games. Aside from this, the Thunder weren’t messing around this offseason. Before securing Jalen Williams’ contract, the Thunder also secured their main star, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s contract as well.
In addition to SGA, they also secured their star center, Chet Holmgren‘s contract extension, too, showcasing that they mean business. The Thunder’s message to their opponents in the NBA was clear: they’re coming for another shot at the title in the upcoming 2025-26 season.
NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal makes honest admission about Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s new contract
If one were to look at SGA’s numbers this past season, then he or she would willingly agree to the OKC Thunder giving him a whooping $285 million contract extension ($70 million a year), making him one of the highest earners in the NBA. In addition to that, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal also chimed in on this matter, making his opinion known on SGA’s new contract extension.
O’Neal is someone who doesn’t like to mince his words and is straight up whenever he needs to talk on any matter. This is exactly what he did this time around.
Congratulations to Shai. That’s what $70 million looks like. You ain’t got nothing to say about that $70 million. The best player in the league by far. He deserves that. When you pay a guy $70 million a year, that’s the outcome. That’s how it’s supposed to look.

Shai led OKC to the championship with an average of 30.3 points and 5.6 assists in the thrilling seven-game matchup with the Indiana Pacers. Shaq’s claim that he is the league’s top player is, therefore, accepted by most. He also won his first MVP award during the regular campaign, posting 32.7 points and more than six assists.
