Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris are being sent by the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers. This is in return for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round selection. In addition, Jalen Hood-Schifino and second-round draft picks from the Lakers and the Mavericks are also acquired by the Utah Jazz. This is part of the three-team trade. However, LeBron James knew none of this.
According to ESPN, he actually first received the news while dining with his family. This was after the Lakers defeated the New York Knicks 128–112 on Saturday. Given that, there has been a lot of noise as to how James and Doncic would combine on the court. There have also been rumors regarding James leaving the Lakers, now since the franchise has found their next ‘star.’

In addition, James leaving the Lakers won’t be a surprise. Because he is in the twilight years of his NBA career. Also, a move away from the LA franchise could be appealing to him. So, let us take a look at the 3 reasons why LeBron James could leave the Los Angeles Lakers:
Team Chemistry and Fit:
When LeBron James is surrounded by teammates who can play to his strengths, like shooters and dynamic big men, he performs at his best. However, there may be some overlap because Luka Doncic is a ball-dominant player. Doncic enjoys the pick-and-roll and shares James’ offensive approach.

For both players to be effective, the ball must be in their hands; otherwise, there may be a disparity in offensive positions or problems with spacing. James, for example, is a natural playmaker who frequently leads the attack and creates opportunities for others, and Doncic has been doing the same for the Mavericks.
Given that, James may have trouble adjusting if they can’t work out a way to work together so that both players can be successful. James may view his tenure in Los Angeles as unsustainable and wish to seek a more peaceful environment elsewhere. This is if he believes the team is unable to balance the offensive load and is having trouble finding its rhythm with Doncic.
Frustration with Front Office Decisions
James might conclude from a move like this that his side is either changing course or not giving his championship window the priority he desires. When James’ contract expires, he may push for an exchange or decide to leave. This is if he believes the organization is making decisions that conflict with his objectives for winning championships.

Given that he has previously experienced major roster changes during his stay in Los Angeles, the Lakers’ willingness to perhaps drastically alter the team without consulting him could turn him off.
Desire for a Championship Window
Although he is still playing at a high level, LeBron James is 40 years old (as of 2025). Also, winning championships is his top priority at this point in his career. However, if a trade for Luka Doncic makes it more difficult for the Lakers to contend for a championship, James may think about his options.

This can also be because of chemistry problems. A lack of other supporting players, or a shift in the dynamics of the team as a whole. However, no such decision has been made as of yet. But these are the 3 possible reasons James might seriously consider leaving the franchise in the future.
