The Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl glow has dimmed slightly with the news that Kellen Moore is leaving to become the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the ripple effect of this big hiring is likely to affect them acutely.

Not only does Moore’s departure leave a void on the Eagles’ coaching staff, but it also raises critical questions about the team’s offensive future. On top of that, the Super Bowl LIX champions now face a new challenge: replacing their offensive coordinator. Reports state that Moore interviewed for the position long ago but due to the NFL’s policy, the franchise had to stay put until the Super Bowl was over and as it did, they didn’t waste any time.

Leaving a team filled with star offensive weapons, who managed to keep the Eagles among the top offenses throughout the regular season and continued with the same momentum in the playoffs leading up to the Super Bowl championship; Moore is moving to an organization that hasn’t seen the glimmer of playoffs since the 2020– the last of Drew Brees’ season in the NFL before retirement.

While a testament to Moore’s talent, this move creates significant challenges for the Eagles, as they look to continue their championship trajectory.

Another offensive system instability for Jalen Hurts

Moore’s departure once again might bring instability to Philly’s offense after he spent a season with a distinct coaching approach to make it better and win the Super Bowl. But more than anyone, it is likely to affect quarterback Jalen Hurts the most as he will be working with his fourth offensive coordinator in five years.

This constant change in the offensive philosophy, play-calling, and terminology may hinder the quarterback’s development since he’s only 26. After winning the Super Bowl, now Hurts faces the task of learning a new offensive system, building a good bond with him, and maintaining his high level of play– which may or may not work for Philly next season.

Losing the key architect of Super Bowl-winning offense

Offensive Coordinator Moore and Quarterback Coach Doug Nussmeier literally helped the Eagles win the Super Bowl without breaking their winning momentum of the regular season. And now NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Moore is even planning to take Nussmeier with him in the Saints.

As far as his staff goes, Doug Nussmeier is his quarterbacks coach at Philadelphia and would be considered a strong candidate to have a big role on the offensive staff, perhaps offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.

Ian Rapoport reported

If that happens, the Eagles would not only lose the architects of their Super Bowl-winning offense but also have the Saints as a rising competitor in the NFC, which could be a major blowout for the Eagles.

Eagles scrambling for offensive stability

Losing both Moore and possibly Nussmeier would be a significant challenge for Philly’s head coach Nick Sirianni, as it adds to the sense of instability within his coaching staff. After the collapse of last season, they fired Brian Johnson as their offensive coordinator, which was preceded by moving on Sean Desai and Matt Patricia.

While the Eagles are proactive in hiring experienced replacements like Moore and Vic Fangio, the constant turnover creates uncertainty. Now they are burdened to find a better replacement for Moore, under whom they only thrived, to maintain the Eagles’ offensive firepower.
