When Caitlin Clark was preparing for a championship run this season, she did not expect injuries to become an obstacle to her goals. The Indiana Fever had hoped to build a title-winning roster, but without her playmaking, they may not be able to go the distance.
The 23-year-old’s ability to find open looks is unlike anyone else in the league. In addition to that, her scoring gives the team an additional punch and helps to spread the floor, which benefits their run-and-cut style of play.
The team was built with that style in mind, as Kelsey Mitchell, Natasha Howard, Sophie Cunningham, Lexie Hull, and rookie Mikayla Timpson have the skills that can exploit that. However, without Clark’s playmaking genius, they may not be able to exploit it to its fullest.
They have been on a stellar run of wins that has elevated them to 5th in the table. If they continue this run, they could possibly end up 2nd. It now seems that Caitlin Clark‘s injury absence and the remaining regular season schedule could be a blessing in disguise.
Caitlin Clark needs time to completely recover
In the 1st episode of her new podcast, Sophie Cunningham shared that their current winning form could help avoid rushing Caitlin Clark back. The last time the Fever did that, she injured her other groin and has since missed 5 games.

Soft tissue injuries are difficult to manage, as there is no clear indication of recovery. The best method is to give it time. After she injured her left groin, Clark returned to play 14 days later.
This time, it has already been 17 days, and even if the 23-year-old has started participating in shootarounds, there is no clear timetable for a return. The Fever are currently on a 4-game road trip, which means it is unlikely that she will play in any of these games.
Their next home game is against the Chicago Sky on August 9th. If she were to return, it would be a full 24 days of rest. If the Fever wants to be extra cautious, they could wait until the next game against the Dallas Wings on August 12th to reintroduce her into their lineup.
Fever form could help extend Caitlin Clark’s recovery timetable
That home stretch includes games against 4 of the bottom 5 teams in the league. If the Indiana Fever continues to upset teams on this road trip, they will continue to climb the playoff ladder.

That means by the time Caitlin Clark returns, she might not face the pressure to perform well against a top-tier team. Her teammates’ current form should be enough to ensure they win those matchups.
Playoff seeding matters, and even if Fever fans make it a habit of turning opposing arenas into home-court advantage, there is nothing better than playing at home.
Last season, all four higher-seeded teams swept their lower-seeded playoff opponents in the 1st round. Getting a favorable seeding can help the Fever get past the 1st round with ease.
For that reason, the Fever must continue to win games without Caitlin Clark. Only then can they help her ease back into the rotation without losing out on that form, especially in the playoffs.
Caitlin Clark will need a few games to get back into rhythm
Before she injured her right groin, Caitlin Clark was shooting abysmally from deep. Without that deep threat, opponents can alter their defense and focus on the other players.

Some believe her soft tissue struggles might have impacted her shooting rhythm. Therefore, it is imperative that whenever she comes back, she has time to regain her playing form, as well as her shooting efficiency.
For that reason, the Indiana Fever has to ensure that Clark gets at least 5–10 games before the playoffs start. That number is important as she will have to go through a lot of motions to get a good feel for the game.
The franchise also has to convince the 23-year-old to agree to minutes restrictions. Taking a risk this late in the season can derail their plans. Clark wants to fight for a title, but she has to take it easy initially.
Once she does, and the team understands how to exploit their collective skills, it is possible that the Fever will end up fighting for a chance to win the 2025 WNBA championship.
