A huge moment at the Paris Olympics boxing as Italian Angela Carini quit the match against boxer Imane Khelif in just 46 seconds. Despite all the controversy about the inclusion of transgender women in women’s sports, the IOC decided to allow it in the Olympics. However, it is worth noting that Khelif is not a proven transgender, but rather an athlete who failed gender test, back in 2023.
With the passing of that rule, there are ‘boxers who failed gender eligibility test’ competing in different sports. No major incident took place up until the boxing match between Khelif and Carini. Both the players got in the ring and just as the bell rang, the Algerian boxer landed two clean blows to her opponent’s head.
It had hardly been 46 seconds when the blows were landed. Right after, the Italian called for the referee and quit the match. She was visibly upset with the competition as she stood in the middle of the ring crying and holding her nose. She explained that she had never been hit so hard before and quit the match.

As the referee lifted the arm of the winner (Khelif), Carini immediately jerked her hand away and did not even shake hands with her opponent. It was an emotional retirement from the Italian who was at a gender disadvantage from the very beginning.
Angela Carini opens up about the reason to take part in the match in the first place
After the 46-second exit by Italian Angela Carini, her coach was the first one to open up about the situation. In the mixed zone, her coach revealed that his player’s nose has to be checked if it’s broken or not.
Furthermore, he also revealed that many people had already warned her from playing the match as she was up against someone who failed a gender test. Soon, Carini also revealed the reason for competing in the first place.
I had entered the ring to fight. I didn't give up, but a punch hurt too much and so I said enough. I go out with my head held high.Angela Carini told the reporters in Italian after the match
Nonetheless, the whole internet is behind her as they blamed the IOC for including transgender women/gender test failed athletes in women’s sports which forced the original players to quit the tournament. Nonetheless, Khelif moved on to the next round and will continue her quest for a medal.
