Ever since Brock Purdy burst onto the scene as the lead quarterback for the San Fransisco 49ers, the football world has been talking about his Cinderella story. Mr. Irrelevant even held his poise and was the primary signal caller for his team as they returned to the Super Bowl. But even after doing all this, he will be paid less than his backups.
The San Fransisco 49ers currently have four quarterbacks on their roster—Purdy, Tanner Mordecai, Brandon Allen and Joshua Dobbs. The 49ers signed Mordecai this season as an undrafted free agent. Allen is a holdover from last year’s roster and has eight years of experience under his belt.
Joshua Dobbs was signed after his heroics for the Minnesota Vikings last season as a backup. This meant, Dobbs and Allen will get more than $2 million for their services. Mordecai, owing to the ever-increasing salary cap, will get $951,667 this season if he stays. This means, Purdy at a yearly average of $934,253 is paid the lowest.
Now this is a surprising situation considering the three backup QBs may not even get to take a single snap once the regular season starts. In comparison, the Super Bowl hopes of the 49ers are in the hands of Brock Purdy. Definitely a testament of his growth into becoming a franchise quarterback.
But one cannot disregard the economics in play here. Brock Purdy was signed to the cheapest possible QB contract owing to his draft position. The problem compounding the situation is that Purdy will have to wait until his next extension kicks in after the 2026 season.
Brock Purdy will look to prove his critics wrong, again
The flip side of becoming the first Mr. Irrelevant quarterback to throw a touchdown pass in a Super Bowl is that he proved many people that they were wrong in judging his draft summary. This also means that those people will come back to question his ability the moment he does something wrong. This is the same situation a certain Tom Brady was in.
But Brock Purdy stands as the only quarterback to beat Tom Brady as a rookie. He has also extended the Super Bowl window for the San Fransisco 49ers.
Thankfully, in the last Super Bowl, he was not the reason they lost. But that will not stop everyone from questioning him. To change this notion, he will have to prove to them, again, that he is capable of leading a team to the hallowed grounds, just like Tom Brady did.
Only then will the narration start to change for the better. His first big contract is not too far away. A Super Bowl will help shape that contract and more importantly, the narrative around Mr. Irrelevant.
