When the San Francisco 49ers stepped on the football field at Allegiant Stadium, they were all ready to defeat reigning Super Bowl champions. Not they were the NFC champion, but also favorites to win the Vince Lombardi trophy.

And they sure stood well on their words to win as they dominated the field for a lot of the game, i.e. until the third quarter. Until the Kansas City Chiefs returned from their brief locker room break and swept the trophy right underneath the Niners. And the pain of the tragic loss still aches the hearts of the players, especially quarterback Brock Purdy

At his youth football camp at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, the second-year quarterback revealed that he has been watching Super Bowl LVIII repeatedly for the past few months. During these viewings, he not only identified the overtime rule mistake as a reason for their loss, but also recognized several missed opportunities that gave their opponents an advantage.

It still just stinks because there were plays out there that could have been made--I feel there were a couple plays, where I’m like, ‘Dude, that could have been the difference.’ But that’s across the board. It’s four quarters of every play matters.
Brock Purdy in a conversation with Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group

Even though the Niners couldn’t succeed with a victory, they sure gave tough competition to the Chiefs in their 25-22 overtime victory.

How the 49ers’ loss is fueling optimism for the next season

The 49ers could have won the trophy if they hadn’t made the blunder in the overtime by choosing to take the ball first. They were unaware of the revised overtime rules, bringing in a lot of criticism to the entire team, especially head coach Kyle Shanahan

However, when it came to taking responsibility, the 24-year-old stepped in taking full responsibility for the loss, with teary eyes at the post-game press conference. And the quarterback is still not over the loss.

Obviously it’s still stinging about how we ended the year. We were right there. There’s going to be a lot of guys that are hungry and have that chip on their shoulder, again.
Brock Purdy said

However, he also expressed optimism for the next season, citing that they had learned from their previous mistakes and hoped to use these lessons to their advantage in the future.
