The San Francisco 49ers’ first goal this off-season will be to reduce some weight and manpower off their roster. The team is looking for lucrative trade offers in exchange for star receiver Deebo Samuel. He is entering the final year of his three-year, $71.5 million deal.
Samuel requested to be traded at the exit meetings conducted by the San Francisco 49ers. However, his trade value comes with a caution for teams interested in bringing him aboard.
Deebo Samuel is not in football shape and has let himself go by packing on nearly 20 pounds. Tim Kawakami of SF Standard states that the wide receiver’s weight has affected his performance.
He is not in shape. I keep hearing it, 20 pounds overweight. And that led to a lot of his lack of explosion, in their belief, his lack of ability to get through tackles, (which has) kind of been who he is. That’s why he’s so valuable. It’s not because he’s outrunning people.
Tim Kawakami said via the 49ers +/- podcast
A lack of explosiveness should be concerning at this stage because for a trade involving Samuel to be successful, he will need to pass his physicals.
The San Francisco 49ers are seeking a small price in exchange for Deebo Samuel
In his defense, since the team’s season ended early in January, Samuel has decided to enjoy himself and stray away from his regular diet and workout regimen. However, he should have stayed in decent shape since he intended to seek a trade from the team early on.

The San Francisco 49ers hope to part ways with Deebo Samuel as soon as possible. The team understands that they are in no position to ask for a lot in exchange for him considering his below-700-yard season this year. For now, the goal is to part ways with him at the earliest and seek a third-round pick or better that can be utilized in the upcoming draft.

Deebo Samuel’s disappointment with the 49ers organization stems from his reduced role in the team’s offense. With the emergence of Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, and the recent addition of Ricky Pearsall, the 49ers have switched to a heavily run-reliant offense and no longer need Samuel to be the go-to receiver. He now hopes to go to a team that will look to him as the WR1.
