There have been a lot of question marks on Deebo Samuel this year. It has even reached the point that many want Samuel to be demoted from the team captain’s position.

The latest one put a very large dent in his credibility for being a leader in the San Francisco 49ers’ locker room. After the Niners’ recent defeat against the Seattle Seahawks, in which he caught just one pass, Samuel refused to speak with the media in the post-match press conference.

A section of the fans viewed this combination of actions as trying to avoid taking responsibility, which is a bad look for a team captain. During the latest episode of his podcast Cleats and Convos with Deebo Samuel, the Pro Bowler shed light on people demanding 49ers strip the Pro Bowler of his captain duties.

At the end of the day, in order for me to have the ‘C’ [captain’s patch] on my chest, it’s not too much of a coach’s decision… It’s a player-voted thing. We do that as a group. If my peers and everybody around feel like I deserve to have a ‘C’ on my chest, I’m gonna wear it with pride.

Samuel, along with George Kittle, Trent Williams, and Fred Warner, share the responsibilities as captains for the Niners team. It’s always a collective effort from all the captains to keep the team in the best shape during the game. Samuel is usually a cool customer, but a string of losses can take a toll on anyone.

Altercation with Jake Moody didn’t have any effect on Deebo Samuel’s captaincy

During Week 10’s narrow win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Samuel went through a slight meltdown. After kicker Jake Moody wasted a couple of three-pointers, the 28-year-old threw a left hook at him and argued with long-snapper Taybor Pepper.

Even though several former players defended Samuel, social media did not appreciate the reaction. Head coach Kyle Shanahan claimed they had a team meeting to sort everything out.

It’s kind of crazy. At the end of the day, we hold each other. My teammates, myself, Kyle [Shanahan], John [Lynch] and [Jed York], and other owners that are part of the team. We hold ourselves to a higher standard than what people hold us to.

The Niners need to get it together; otherwise, the season will end quickly without any post-season football. However, Samuel remains optimistic that Shanahan will lead the team to the playoffs even though they are 5-6.
