The San Fransisco 49ers want to return to the Super Bowl. Not just this coming season, but they want to keep their Super Bowl window open for as long as possible. But in order to do that, they will need to ensure the roster sees an improvement. They will also need to tie down the important pieces of their current roster to ensure the base is set. Brandon Aiyuk is one of the most integral pieces, but Adam Schefter reveals they do not want to sign him for a hefty price.

As a guest on NFL Live, the longtime Insider was asked if the discussions between the 49ers and Aiyuk had progressed. He revealed that despite Aiyuk’s claim that the team does not want him, multiple sources within the 49ers organization have consistently expressed their desire to retain him.

Having spoken to the Niners multiple times, multiple Niners people throughout the course of the offseason, every single one of them said they wanted Brandon Aiyuk back. It was a priority. So, when Brandon Aiyuk says, 'they don't want me there'. It's just not true. They absolutely do want him there. They just don't want him there at the price that he's looking for right now.

Schefter mentioned that the San Fransisco 49ers do want their star wideout signed for the long term. It is just that they do not want to pay the hefty price Aiyuk is asking.

What complicated the situation is that since the two sides have been in discussions, the wide receiver market has exploded. The deals signed by good to great receivers has reset the market, making it difficult for a team such as the 49ers to get Brandon Aiyuk to agree to their price.

If the 49ers want to keep their Super Bowl chances open, they need to sign the 26-year-old who seamlessly fits their schemes. However, they also have a backup plan in case all attempts fail.

San Fransisco 49ers have insurance incase Brandon Aiyuk does not sign

The one thing the San Fransisco 49ers have learnt over the years is that they cannot afford to overpay for any player. That is despite how integral that player’s skills are to their schemes. They learnt from the days of Jimmy Garoppolo that the organization will be hum strung if a long-term signing does not pan out.

That led them to draft former Florida Gator Ricky Pearsall. Pearsall will evidently give them that negotiation room with Aiyuk. After all, the team’s needs are above and beyond that of any player. But Pearsall will need time to learn and earn the trust of his head coach Kyle Shanahan and his quarterback. Only then can he start to take 1st team snaps consistently.

All in all, the San Fransisco 49ers are looking to maximize the team as long as they can. Such a policy even moved them to allow franchise stalwart Arik Armstead to walk away. The Super Bowl is the ultimate goal.
