At a recent press conference, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch mentioned hearing a new conspiracy theory claiming that an electrical substation near their practice facility in Santa Clara, California, is causing injuries to the Niners players. Although the cause seems improbable, Lynch assured that he would look into it.
The Niners returned to the playoffs in 2025 by finishing third in the NFC West, behind the Seahawks and the Rams. In the following week, the Niners took down the defending world champions, the Eagles, in Philadelphia. The result set up a tie with Seattle, which ended in a 41-6 beatdown for San Francisco.
Kyle Shanahan admitted that the Seahawks outplayed his team. However, he did a remarkable job leading the team to the playoffs in the first place, especially given the number of injured players. Up to 20 players were either dealing with some type of injury or listed on the injured reserve. Big names like Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, and George Kittle missed considerable game time due to injuries.
On Wednesday, a few days after the loss to the Seahawks, Lynch touched upon the viral conspiracy that has allegedly caused all the injuries to the players. Lynch promised to investigate the theory at a later date.
We aren’t going to turn a blind eye. We’ll look into everything.

John Lynch promises to investigate the viral electrical substation theory that’s allegedly causing the injuries to the 49ers players
The theory was first presented by Peter Cowan, a self-proclaimed board-certified clinician. In his report, Cowan highlighted that molecules from the substation near the Levi’s Stadium training facility slowly “weakening the players’ collagen, leading to injuries under loads other teams routinely absorb.”

According to Cowan’s research, since moving to Levi’s Stadium in 2014, no other team has had more injuries than the 49ers. The list of injuries includes 7-8 full Achilles/patellar ruptures (league average: 2-3/year TOTAL), 40+ major hamstring/calf tears, and at least one high-ankle syndesmosis injury.
The San Francisco 49ers are statistically the most injured team in the NFL over the past decade.

Cowan’s theory has received mixed reviews from all corners. Lynch, on the other hand, isn’t sold on the hypothesis just yet until something concrete shows up.
You have to look into everything… We’ve been reaching out to [anyone and] everyone to see does a study exist other than a guy sticking an apparatus underneath a fence and coming up with a number that I have no idea what that means, that’s what we know exists. We’ve heard that debunked. So yes, we will look into it.

Niners wide receiver Kendrick Bourne gave the best possible reaction to the news, right after the divisional playoff loss. “It’s that power plant,” Bourne joked (H/T: the New York Post), but quickly added “Nah. I’m just playing.”

The Niners’ season is over. But there’s three more games still left to be played. The AFC and NFC Championship games and then the Super Bowl on February 8 at Levi’s Stadium.
