Deebo Samuel left the game early during the Kansas City Chiefs game on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium. The initial reason listed for the wide receiver’s sudden departure was illness.

A day later, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed the main reason for Samuel’s discomfort. According to Sports Illustrated’s Grant Cohn, who spoke with Shanahan, Samuel is in the hospital, suffering from a disease similar to pneumonia, or it could be pneumonia (fluid in his lungs). The doctors are still processing it.

He’s in the hospital still and we’ll see how he recovers here over these next couple of days.

The 28-year-old also missed one game at the start of the campaign due to a hamstring injury. He so far has 335 yards and one touchdown in six games.

The 49ers also lost Brandon Aiyuk in the same game. Although Samuel has a chance of recovering from his sickness, Aiyuk will miss the entire season because of an ACL tear in his left knee. The 49ers lost the Week 7 fixture against the Chiefs and sit with a 3-4 record.

The season hasn’t been great for the 49ers. Shanahan had to plan their attack by excluding the likes of reigning OPOY Christian McCaffrey, rookie Ricky Pearsall, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, and safety Talanoa Hufanga.

In the absence of several big-name players, quarterback Brock Purdy has occasionally struggled to make much of an impact, which showed in the Chiefs game as he threw three picks. With Aiyuk out for the entire season and Samuel questionable to return, Purdy’s job became even harder.

In the meantime, the Athletic’s Dianna Russini dropped a massive trade rumor surrounding Deebo Samuel. Russini claimed that several teams have remained interested in the 49ers receivers since Aiyuk’s off-season holdout. After he signed a four-year $120 million deal, the focus switched to Samuel.

The former South Carolina wideout has one year left on his three-year $71.5 million contract, which ends in 2025, and he will enter free agency in 2026. On top of that, Purdy also has a big salary due around the same time, which may impact the salary cap scenario unless they make a trade now before the November 5 deadline.

It depends on what Shanahan wants. The 49ers receiving core currently has Pearsall, Jacob Cowing, Jauan Jennings, Ronnie Bell, and Chris Conley in the depth chart. There’s no guarantee that Samuel can make it back for the Week 8 game against the Cowboys, so one of them has to fill in.
