One major face was missing from the San Francisco 49ers’ starting team in the season-opening game as Christain McCaffrey sat out while recovering from his calf injury. After months of hold, head coach Kyle Shanahan finally gave an update on the injury which made him miss week 1.
Last season ended on a sad note for the reigning Offensive Player of the Year as he sustained an injury to his calf in week 17, which was later revealed to be Achilles tendonitis. Giving an update, head coach Shanahan stated that if it had been a playoff game, they should have kept McCaffrey active.
However, since it was a regular season game, the team decided to give the star running back some rest until he recovered completely. The team didn’t want to be too hard on McCaffrey because he had already been pushing his limits after the poor Super Bowl loss in February.
Definitely, I believe if it was a playoff game, he would've played. But it's not just the calf, it's the Achilles and the Achilles is tendonitis and that stuff comes and goes. When it is acting up, it's something you've got to be very careful about. Christian's very diligent about that stuff.Shanahan said, via the team’s official website.
The 49ers head coach shared that the running back told him that he was ready to play if it was a playoff game. But since his full recovery would take time, it was in his best interest to sit out.
Will Christain McCaffrey leave the 49ers in near future?
McCaffrey took the Super Bowl loss quite hard on himself and there have been trade rumors swirling around throughout the offseason. The speculation remains active because his previous deal which brought the running back to the Niners, wasn’t revealed until it was officially done.
Peddy Shanahan, Kyle’s mother tried to get some hints or information from her son for the sake of Christian’s mother, Lisa. However, he refused to reveal any information whatsoever regarding the trade rumors of the star running back.
However, the odds of McCaffrey’s trade deal to another team are quite low, especially since his contributions to the team’s success. In his time in San Francisco, he has logged 3200 yards, 31 touchdowns in the 26 games he started.
