Kyle Shanahan reinstated Mac Jones as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback after Brock Purdy aggravated his sore toe in week four. Jones balled out against the Los Angeles Rams on his return.
Purdy played against the Jacksonville Jaguars after recovering from a toe injury that he sustained in a week one victory over the Seattle Seahawks. The Niners sidelined him for the next two weeks in order for him to make a full recovery.
Doctors permitted Purdy to start a couple of days before hosting the AFC South team. He threw for two touchdowns and 309 yards but also conceded two picks and a turnover that resulted in a 26-21 defeat.
To make matters worse, Purdy aggravated the same toe that kept him out in the wins over the New Orleans Saints and the Arizona Cardinals.
Mac Jones deputized in place for Purdy in those fixtures and brought the same winning flair when he faced the Rams on Thursday Night Football. Jones threw for 342 yards on 33 completions (67%) and 2 touchdowns and finished with a 107.53 quarterback rating.

Mac Jones secures an overtime road win for the 49ers
Shanahan’s benching of Jones for the Jaguars tie did not come as a shock. The Alabama graduate signed for the Niners as Purdy’s primary backup, with Adrian Martinez as the third choice.

Shanahan turned to Jones once more to save the team from falling to their second loss of the year. Despite taking one sack and several hits that nearly left him injured, Jones led the Niners to a 26-23 overtime win against a strong Rams team.

In three games, Jones’ overall tally stands at 86 completions from 129 attempts (66.7%) for 905 yards, 7.0 yards per throw, 6 touchdowns, 1 interception, 5 sacks, and a quarterback rating of 99.1.

What the 49ers are doing right now with all the injuries & still finding ways to win is next level.
Proves time and time again that Kyle Shanahan is one of the best coaches in NFL.

If the 49ers draft Mac Jones like was rumored instead of Trey Lance so many things are different. The 49ers probably win a Super Bowl, Mac Jones is one of the highest paid QBs in football, & we never find out just how good Brock Purdy is.

UNBELIEVBEABLE! The 49ers have beaten evey team in the NFC West. A heavy underdog (8-1/2pts) at the Rams, they get a 26-23 win in overtime. Kyren Williams stopped on 4th and 1. Mac Jones is 3-0 at a starter for SF, now 4-1. Wow. In front of a SoFi Stadium/Levi's South crowd… pic.twitter.com/vSxpoFGseq

Mac Jones
(Only Jones did it in his first 3 games played with the Niners)
Mac Jones really just trotted into LA, carved up the Rams defense, and left with a win.

I have thoughts.
The New England Patriots drafted Mac Jones 15th overall in 2021, twelve draft picks after the Niners took Trey Lance. Despite posting a 10-7 rookie season and a Pro Bowl nod, Jones regressed in the following two years, which led to the Pats trading him to the Jaguars in 2024.
Jones started seven games in the absence of Trevor Lawrence. He finished with a 2-5 record before entering free agency. Shanahan and Niners GM John Lynch decided to poach him on a two-year, $7 million deal.
Since entering the league, Jones has played a total of 55 games, completing 1121 passes from 1699 attempts (66%) for 11,495 passing yards, 60 touchdowns, and 45 interceptions. He has also taken 103 sacks, fumbled the ball 19 times, and lost it on 9 occasions, as per StatMuse.
