The San Francisco 49ers are well known for their star-studded offense and it appears they were trying to poach another star player, who recently became the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history with his $140 million deal– Justin Jefferson.
Prior to the lucrative deal signed by the star wide receiver, there were rumors about a potential trade scenario, and as the trade rumor made its way across the league, many teams emerged as interest candidates. One of whom was the 49ers, who inquired about the trade of Jefferson from the Vikings, as Adam Schefter reported on his podcast, The Adam Schefter Podcast.
The 49ers reached out about Justin Jefferson, you know that?--This was all before the draft, and every team that called the Vikings before the draft was told 'We're not trading him.'Adam Schefter said
Even though the Vikings dismissed all trade offers on its arrival, the 49ers’ attempting to acquire a star wide receiver in possibly a lucrative deal, when their own star WR Brandon Aiyuk is awaiting the extension, will raise many eyebrows.
While the 49ers failed to add Jefferson to the active roster, he signed a mammoth deal with the Vikings and reset the entire wide receiver market– which ended up impacting Aiyuk’s situation.
49ers wideout Brandon Aiyuk’s disputed contract situation
One of the biggest questions about this offseason has been Aiyuk’s extension and the lucrative number he is projected to get. Whether it’s the Detroit Lions for Aman-Ra St. Brown or the Vikings for Jefferson– teams all across the league are paying their wide receivers in a rewarding way.
Aiyuk is coming off a remarkable season where he contributed to his team’s run for the Super Bowl, even more than the team’s No. 1 receiver. He also recorded his career-high receiving yards of 1,342 and seven scoring touchdowns and earned Second-Team All-Pro honor.
Aiyuk isn’t the only wide receiver awaiting an extension as Tee Higgins and CeeDee Lamb are also holding out on their team’s offseason programs. But the Niners’ wideout situation has reached an alarming stage since he became subject to a fine for missing the mandatory training camp.
