There are still days left before Dre Greenlaw makes his 49ers return, but the linebacker has already cost the organization $100,000. The NFL disciplinary committee slapped the punishment because of Greenlaw’s action during the week 6 game against the Arizona Cardinals.
49ers corner Charvarius Ward and Cardinals tight end Trey McBride had a standoff in front of the 49ers dugout, attracting massive attention on the sidelines. Cameras caught the incident from various angles, and while fans backed Ward for standing up to McBride who insinuated the skirmish, they also noticed something else.
When McBride shoved Ward by grabbing the facemask, Dre Greenlaw rammed into him out of nowhere. He was in street clothes, just hanging out with his teammates until the fight broke out. The 27-year-old pushed McBride away from Ward before the 49ers staff intervened.
The NFL fined the #49ers organization $100,000 and LB Dre Greenlaw $14,069 for an incident last week in which Greenlaw — who is on the PUP list — shoved #Cardinals TE Trey McBride, per sources.

As a result, nothing major transpired, but on Saturday night, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero revealed that the league’s disciplinary committee fined the 49ers’ organization $100,000 as punishment for an inactive player getting involved in a sideline scuffle. Additionally, they fined Ward $11,255, Greenlaw $14,069, and McBride $9,545 for unnecessary roughness.
Why isn’t Dre Greenlaw playing?
Greenlaw signed a two-year extension worth $16.55 million; however, the sixth-year veteran edge rusher remains out of the game and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. He suffered a devastating Achilles tear at Super Bowl LVIII.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan claimed in September there was no set timeline for Greenlaw’s return, but he remains a key part of the defense. General Manager John Lynch provided an update right before playing the Cardinals.
Lynch still expects Greenlaw to make a midseason return around Christmas.
Greenlaw kept the Kansas City Chiefs in check at Vegas back in February. He suddenly collapsed while walking back into the field of play and was carted off. It didn’t take long for the Chiefs to utilize the absence of the Arkansas graduate as tight end Travis Kelce took advantage of a weakened LB core. Eventually, Mecole Hardman’s touchdown broke the Bay Area’s hearts.
The 49ers are set for a rematch in week 7 against the Chiefs. Greenlaw will undeniably be beside his teammates, urging them on to hand the Chiefs their first loss of the season.
