49ers Writer Issues Stern Warning to Deommodore Lenoir Following Arrest by LA Authorities: “You Have a Ton to lose”

Grant Cohn advised Deommodore Lenoir to steer clear from bad groups because he is a leader and an important player in the 49ers team whom they cannot afford to lose.

Deommodore Lenoir’s arrest in Los Angeles made longtime San Francisco 49ers correspondent and beat writer Grant Cohn angry. From Cohn’s point of view, Lenoir, being a captain of the team, should maturely conduct himself and avoid involving himself with the wrong people.

According to documents obtained by ESPN and TMZ, the LAPD’s 77th Division saw two cars parked side by side after 5 P.M. on Thursday, June 26. After doing a sweep around the cars, the officers discovered a firearm and wanted the group that included Lenoir to hand over the keys.

The guy who had the keys tossed it to another one, and then he threw it to Lenoir. He did not heed the police officer’s warnings and found himself cuffed around 5:30 P.M. Four hours later, Lenoir was booked on a misdemeanor charge.

Grant Cohn was angry while covering Lenoir’s arrest on his YouTube channel. Captains are supposed to lead by example even when they are not on the football field. Incidents like this set a bad precedent and put the organization under scrutiny.

I know Deommodore Lenoir fairly well… He’s always been a nice guy to me—seems like a genuine guy [but] at the same time, he’s 25, and this seems like a mistake a 25-year-old player who just got paid millions and millions of dollars might make.

Grant Cohn said

The 49ers signed Lenoir to a five-year, $88.88 million contract extension that includes $38.35 million guaranteed following a three-year period during which he recorded 180 tackles, 4 interceptions, and one sack.

Cohn argued that Lenoir’s position and status in society changed as soon as he signed his name on the piece of paper, and he should have behaved accordingly instead of mingling with people who would get him into trouble.

You cannot hang out with people who don’t have anything to lose… [because] you have a ton to lose. It’s not just you personally; it’s the 49ers. You are the number one cornerback for the 49ers. They got rid of Charvarius Ward because they felt you were a better bet long term, and that means you have to be a grownup—45 years old.

Cohn added

To be fair, Ward decided to leave San Francisco for personal reasons. However, Cohn’s assessment is valid because team management does not assign the captain’s title to just anyone. Only individuals with a mature mindset are honored with this responsibility. Although the police arrested him for a minor offense, his reputation suffered significantly.

What will happen to Deommodore Lenoir?

The authorities set Lenoir free around 1:18 A.M., as per David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard, on his own recognizance. However, he would still have to appear in court on July 25 for a hearing.

The 49ers are set to begin their training camp on July 22. Unless the management imposes any penalties, Lenoir should be cleared to participate in the sessions.

2025 will be a defining year for the 49ers, especially for quarterback Brock Purdy. They thrived with Purdy under center. The former Mr. Irrelevant led the NFC West franchise to consecutive NFC title games and a Super Bowl appearance in 2023.

However, Purdy failed to deliver on the same level in year three, and the 49ers finished last in the division. Despite the epic dip in form, the Niners brass gave Purdy a five-year $265 million contract extension, making him one of the highest-paid players in NFL history. He will have a chance to redeem himself with another big performance in the 2025 season that starts against the Seattle Seahawks on September 7.
