World Record! Great Britain clinch Gold in 4x100m Mixed Medley Relay as China Claims Stunning Silver; Australia Bags Bronze Medal at Tokyo Olympics
Great Britain win 4x100m mixed medley relay
Great Britain clinched another gold medal in what is turning out to be an excellent swimming campaign for them. The team won a gold in the 4x100m mixed medley relay as it made its debut in swimming at Tokyo Olympics this year. China bagged the silver medal, while Australia finished in third place. Italy took fourth place and USA missed out on medals, after finishing fifth.
Great Britain started off with Kathleen Dawson, who swam the 100m backstroke with a time of 58.80s, putting the team in a very strong position. Dawson made an incredible comeback, as she slipped off the wall in the beginning, but made an incredible recovery. Adam Peaty went in next, and covered the deficit with a time of 56.78m.
James Guy had an incredible swim, finishing the butterfly portion of the relay in just 50.00s. Anna Hopkin brought it home for Great Britain, finishing freestyle in just 52.00s. Great Britain had clinched the gold medal with a time of 3:37.58s, breaking the World Record and Olympic Record.
It was China who took second place, after Jiayu Xu swam backstroke with a time of 52.56s. Zibei Yan and Yufei Zhang had strong runs, and ensured that China was in second place at the end of their swims. Junxuan Yang brought it home, with 52.71s in freestyle. China had finished second with a total time of 3:38.86s, winning the silver medal.
Australia was not far behind China, as double Olympic gold medallist Kaylee McKeown started off Australia on a strong foot, finishing backstroke with a time of 58.14s. Izaac Stubblety-Cook and Matthew Temple took to the pool next, as they maintained a steady pace, slowly making up time. 4 time medallist Emma McKeon finished it off for the Australians, with a time of 51.73s. Australia finished third on the podium, with a total time of 3:38.95s, just behind China.
USA missed out on a medal, despite having a strong team of Ryan Murphy, Caeleb Dressel, Lydia Jacoby and Torri Huske. Italy finished ahead of them in fourth place.
