5 Best goals scored by Lionel Messi
Take a walk stroll back the memory lane when Messi used to walk through defences.
Whenever there is a debate over who is the greatest footballer of modern-day football- Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi it is difficult to come to a conclusion. While Ronaldo will be remembered as one of the finest strikers of modern-day football, Messi will be remembered for his all-around productivity. Whether it is building up play, creating goals or scoring mind-numbing solo goals, the Argentine has been a treat to watch for the best part of the last 20 years.
The 35-year-old has seen many ups and downs in his life but he has bounced back with sheer determination and grit. Messi’s silky moves, creativity, dribbles, speed and clever marksmanship have enlightened us for so many years and the legend continues to create the same kind of magic. The six-time Ballon D Or winner has won 10 La Liga titles, four Champions League titles and 2 Copa America titles, seven Copa del Rey medals and his crown jewel, the 2022 World Cup. Messi has scored 804 goals till now and hasn’t slowed down a bit.
What mesmerizes the fans about La Pulga is his ability to pull off a magical few seconds out of nowhere. Be it a line-breaking pass to a completely unmarked team-mate or a drop of the shoulder to break ankles and rifle the ball into the net, Messi has done it all. Despite being heavily one-footed, defenders around the world are still found to be hapless around the magician when he takes them on.
#1 Barcelona FC VS Manchester United FC Champions League Final-2009
Playing in the Champions League is every player’s dream but producing a match-winning performance on such a big stage is different, that too against Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. Lionel Messi delivered when the Catalans needed their star man to step up. Messi positioned himself beautifully and produced an exemplary header inside the box through Xavi’s well-executed pass.
Standing at just 5 feet 7 inches it was amazing to see such a short figure pull out a sensational goal beating the likes of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand in the air. It was wonderfully anticipated and accurately guided into the nets. FC Barcelona won the game as well as the Champions League final with a 2-0 scoreline. While the goal, in its quality, is not the most “Messi-esque”, it was the stage and the leap that makes it special, even by Messi’s standards.

While Messi scored two goals in the match, it was the second goal that will haunt Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia for ages. In the 42nd minute of the second leg, Messi received the ball in Arsenal’s half. He raided the Arsenal backline like a hot knife through butter. The Argentine sat Almunia down and lobbed the ball over his head as he often plays with his kids, and scored his second goal of the game.
The goal was also notable because it was Messi’s 50th of the season and helped Barcelona secure a 3-1 victory over Arsenal, sending them through to the semifinals of the Champions League. It is often cited as one of the greatest goals in Champions League history.
