The Indiana Fever had hoped that Caitlin Clark would use her offseason workouts and rest to propel them towards a championship. Now, after 2/3rds of the season, their season is on the verge of collapsing for reasons other than their play on the court.

Injuries have restricted Clark’s play to just 13 games. Among the rest of them, veteran guard Sydney Colson and mid-season acquisition Aari McDonald have managed to keep the team going.

They have done a good job so far, after the Fever climbed to 5th in the standings. Colson’s experience and team-building capabilities, along with McDonald’s burst of energy and defense, have helped this crew become an outside bet at winning it all.

Now, all of those hopes have almost vanished after the two backup point guards went down with season-ending injuries in the same game. The 2-time champion tore her left ACL in the first quarter, whereas her teammate broke a bone in her right foot in the fourth quarter.

With no timeline set for Clark’s return, the Indiana Fever officially does not have a point guard to start in their next few games. Since the WNBA’s trade deadline has passed, they can only sign a player on a hardship waiver.

However, as per league rules, they have to wait for a game before they can sign a player or two. Being this late in the season, the options available may not excite anyone, but there are still 5 players the Fever can look at to help them continue their season.

Odyssey Sims could be the perfect veteran for the Indiana Fever

Odyssey Sims last played for the Los Angeles Sparks this season. She was eventually waived, but in her limited time there, she displayed flashes of her scoring ability. The 33-year-old might not be as pass savvy as Caitlin Clark, but can do enough to keep the Fever going.

She is ball dominant to a degree, but can score in bunches and run across the floor. Those are traits that can give the team a boost. Moreover, she is an experienced player and might not need much time to understand their style of play.

Zia Cooke could be the dynamic spark plug the Fever needs

Zia Cooke spent most of her season with the Seattle Storm. Then, she was part of a trade that sent her to Washington, only to be waived before she even packed her bags. The Indiana Fever could give her a new destination, now that she is without a job.

The 2023 10th overall pick won a National Championship with Fever star Aliyah Boston. That familiarity should help her get acclimated fast enough. Again, she is not a pass-savvy point guard, but Boston’s emergence as one of the best passing bigs could help overcome that deficit.

Deja Kelly was once thought to be in Caitlin Clark’s league

Deja Kelly went undrafted this year after a not-so-great year at Oregon. She then received a training camp invite from the Las Vegas Aces and single-handedly led them to victory in the 2nd of their preseason games.

Despite that, they waived her as they had other needs than a point guard. Kelly is a score-first guard and was once ranked 6 places lower than Caitlin Clark in the famed recruiting class of 2020. She may not tick all the boxes for the Indiana Fever, but some coaching could unlock some playmaking from her.

Serena Sundell could be the best pass-first guard available

Serena Sundell led the nation in assists last year with 7.3 assists per game. Along with that, her 6′ 1″ frame helps her score a bunch. Some mock drafts projected her to be a 1st round pick this year, but she fell to the 3rd round as teams did not have a need at point guard this season.

She played 19 minutes in the Seattle Storm’s only preseason game, but did not score any points and turned the ball over 4 times. That indicates that she requires coaching if the Fever sign her. However, she has the potential to be a long-term prospect. Just that it is unclear if the franchise wants to go that route.

Jaylyn Sherrod could be Fever’s short-term answer

Everyone knows that the rich get richer, and when the defending champion New York Liberty did that, they waived Jaylyn Sherrod. The undrafted Colorado star is a speedy, dynamic guard who can score, defend, and pass.

But there is a reason she went undrafted, and if the Indiana Fever can coach her up to speed, she could be the best short-term answer. The 23-year-old was a team favorite at the Liberty and could slot in perfectly in Indianapolis.

Other than these 5 options, there is a possibility that former Fever 1st round pick, Grace Berger, becomes available. She is on a 3rd 7-day contract with the Dallas Wings. Unless they sign her for the rest of the season, she could return home.

The franchise has a few options, but it has to make a move that does not negatively impact the team, while also helping the team have some stability until Caitlin Clark returns.
