This was supposed to be the season when Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs proved to the football world that their dynasty is still intact, despite a gut-wrenching loss in Super Bowl LIX.
Had they won, all these conversations would not have mattered, as the franchise would have etched its name in the history books with something that no other team has done throughout the 105 years the NFL has existed.
That did not happen, and the Chiefs were forced to take a rain check and fix what was lacking. They promised to be motivated enough to ensure there is no repeat this season, and worked to strengthen their roster.
They had a frighteningly good receiver core, their offensive line looked to be better, and the defense was going to step up despite being one of the better units last season. The latter has held up their end of the bargain. But it is Mahomes and his unit that have struggled the most. Now, after losing their 4th game in 5 battles, it seems that the dynastic run is officially over.
Not only will the Chiefs not win the AFC West, which has been their own for the past 9 seasons, but their playoff chances currently look bleak. It seems it is time for the franchise to build a new dynasty.
Patrick Mahomes’ receivers are not doing their job
When one looks at this subheading, they will immediately think of Travis Kelce‘s decline and how the Chiefs badly need a new tight end who is not huffing and puffing his way around the gridiron.

There were warning signs last season, but their ‘controversial’ run of wins masked the problem. This time, there is no doubting the fact that Kelce is way past his best. But the concerns have not been confined to the tight end position. The wide receiver unit has struggled with drops, inconsistencies, and its sheer lack of striking fear into opposing defenders.
Analysts have pointed out that this unit was supposed to lead the charge, but their difficulties have compounded the matter for both Patrick Mahomes and his offensive coaches. Both units require a complete reset.
Lack of a running game is hurting Patrick Mahomes
To add further to their inability to generate offense is the lack of a running game. Despite using some known personnel, the unit has only managed to be a middle-of-the-pack group.

Their average of 118.9 yards is middle of the pack, and not enough to support Patrick Mahomes, especially when his receivers are not helping matters. Their superstar quarterback may not be slinging the way he used to during their first two Super Bowls. To get around it, the top brass needs to invest in quality running backs.
Otherwise, their game becomes one-dimensional, just as it did during their embarrassing loss to the Houston Texans. The last thing a team trying to build a dynasty needs is for it to be predictable.
Predictable offense has fingers pointing at Matt Nagy
When an offense becomes predictable, most of the blame usually lands on the offensive coordinator’s shoulders. Even though this is Andy Reid‘s system, it is Matt Nagy who is primarily responsible for setting the team up to execute.

He might have played a part in the Chiefs’ back-to-back Super Bowl wins. But football fans will know that a lot went well for the team during that run. As their opponents evolve, that run of luck may not come around again. This leaves the onus on the coordinator and, to an extent, Reid, to figure out how to leave their opponents second-guessing.
Nagy might not leave, as his ties are strong with Reid. But the latter did let go of Eric Bieniemy, which means the 67-year-old burger-eating grandfather can look to make changes. Otherwise, there is no way they can build another dynasty.
Patrick Mahomes might need a reset
Even if the Kansas City Chiefs rejig their receivers, their running back group, continues upgrading their offensive line, and even hand over play calling duties to someone who can bring some creativity, it all rests on how their signal caller plays.

In the past, there were calls for him to be the rightful heir to Tom Brady‘s throne as the NFL’s GOAT. Now, with the way he has been playing this season, doubts have started creeping up. Either he has slowed down, or all the winning has not helped him grow as a game manager. Whatever it is, his sudden drop in effectiveness has raised alarm bells.
Patrick Mahomes might need some time off to reset the wires inside his brain. Or, he needs to sit on the sidelines and observe his team to figure out what or where they are going wrong. Naturally, benching him would be unthinkable and may cause riots outside Arrowhead Stadium. But for the good of both their superstar quarterback and the future of this team, some time off would be good.
Steve Spagnuolo’s defense needs a few more playmakers
So far, it might seem that all the problems concerning the Kansas City Chiefs are confined to their lackluster offense. It, however, does not mean that their defense does not need some tinkering.

The unit is playing well and is within the top 10 in yards and points allowed. What that does is, it’s that their overall performance masks their real concern. It so happens that the Chiefs’ defense is one of the worst in the league when it comes to generating turnovers.
It is not that turnovers are mandatory to win. But they do need to generate more if they are to give their offense more chances at winning a game. Moreover, turnovers go a long way in uplifting the mood of the entire team. During those 60 minutes, athletes can lose focus, and a huge sack, a fumble, or an interception can give the spark that this team needs.
The defense is not a bad unit, but it could do with some flashy players. A couple of star athletes with the swagger to match Patrick Mahomes will be enough to get the rest into the groove.
Chiefs need to build a new dynasty
All in all, it seems the Kansas City Chiefs need a complete reset. The offense either needs a new voice they can listen to or a slew of new players who can bring in some juice.

The coaches need to rethink how they are game planning against their ever-improving opponents. Then the front office also has to figure out how to do all of this despite having a colossal cap space to manage. This team, which was the league’s shining beacon for almost a decade, could wither away into a has-been. The last thing they need is to enter into a complete rebuild.
It might take one or two years, but when this season is over, GM Brett Veach, head coach Andy Reid, as well as the Hunt family need to hold multiple meetings to figure out how to sort this mess.
They still have their most important player on the books for the next 6 seasons. The last thing they need is to waste those years trying to hold on to something that is already in their past. The Chiefs need a new dynasty.
