Rivalry isn’t just among combatants but also between promoters setting up opportunities. Sometimes it is between parties who take it up as a cash grab. In a neo-boxing four-belt era this is apparent more than ever. Not long ago, when names like Floyd Mayweather made the science behind the sweet science so likable, everyone wanted a piece of the action. There was a time when the ever-popular Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, aka 50 Cent wanted to similarly get into boxing promotion. Veteran Oscar De La Hoya gives the scoop on how that did not last very long.

Oscar De La Hoya sat down with Shannon Sharpe at the ‘Club Shay Shay’ Podcast to discuss the many facets of the sport. From being able to KO Mayweather at the De La Hoya vs Mayweather “The World Awaits” WBC super welterweight championship. To his all-time intense rivalry with UFC boss Dana White. On the topic of 50 Cent reverting to boxing, De La Hoya mentioned how the participation ended swiftly.

We did business together. Canelo fought Kirkland...50 Cent signed Kirkland to a promotional contract. We had a fight together, Canelo knocked him out and that was the end of 50’s promotional career...[laughs].

50 Cent started his own boxing promotional company, TMT Promotions. While not in contention against a name like Golden Boy Promotions, it was already licensed in New York and scouting for Nevada commissions. 50 Cent was to sign Yuriorkis Gamboa and Andre Dirrell, from friend Floyd Mayweather’s team. However, the 50-0 legend grew bigger than life and moved on. Canelo Alvarez put a quick end to his next ventures.

Boxing veteran and 1992 Summer Olympian ‘Golden Boy’ takes pride in that. In spirit, De La Hoya considers himself second to none, except maybe prime Alvarez. Hence, when 50 Cent hinted at pushing him out of future Mayweather fights, they went into a long Twitter tirade in 2012. The rapper feels contended that Mayweather grew out of their alliance and Alvarez later ended his promotional stint.

Oscar De Lay Hoya explains beef with Dana White

Oscar De La Hoya isn’t exactly the easy-going entity that one can sound off. He has had numerous rivalries, even with those he maintained a kinship with. ‘Saul’ Canelo Alvarez for example put his super middleweight title straps on the test against 43-1 (34 KOs) powerhouse Jaime Munguia recently. De La Hoya had billed their DAZN PPV exclusive fight as boring. Something he has done ever since the boxer split from GBP. He has even gone into the deep ends of matchmaking politics with his golden goose – Ryan Garcia.

Even as recently as a month back, he slammed Alvarez again for his Mexican celebratory fight against Edgar Berlanga. Oscar De Lay Hoya isn’t afraid of the reverberations of the feuds he starts. His enmity with UFC head honcho White is also a widely known affair. However, despite firing off on White several times, the 51-year-old says they did not start out enemies.

We were actually cool. When I first thought about getting into the MMA, yeah, I strongly feel that he just wanted to bury me, not have competition…We’re in different sports. He does his thing, I do my thing.
Oscar De Lay Hoya further said

As it turns out, Golden Boy’s foray into MMA is what caused the rift between the two. Especially his ill-fated trilogy with Chuck LiddellTito Ortiz seemed to be the last straw. White’s reaction was less about protecting fighters and more about maintaining an MMA monopoly, De La Hoya suggested. This isn’t the first time he has said that about the 55-year-old. With White maintaining a cutthroat viewpoint on calling out his vices, their dynamic has turned much and much more sour over the years.
