“Not if they want to win!” – 76ers reportedly offering Joel Embiid $193 million extension triggers NBA fans on social media
Joel Embiid has failed to take the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA Finals this season.
Philadelphia 76ers could reportedly offer Joel Embiid $193 million contract extension in July, NBA fans not convinced
Joel Embiid was last year’s MVP and made his case for this year until the knee injury sidelined him for almost the rest of the season. But his absence proved that the Philadelphia 76ers desperately needed his presence on the court. Based on this, they are reportedly looking to offer their superstar center a $193 million extension. But NBA fans are not convinced.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the 76ers could offer Embiid the extension once the window opens in July. Essentially tying him down for an additional 3 years for $193 million. The extension will push his yearly average to more than $64 million. An astronomical sum for a player who no doubt gives MVP-level performances throughout the season and is their main offensive weapon. This extension will tie him down until 2029 when he will be 34.
This means they will tie down their focal point of attack all throughout his prime and give them leeway as he ages. They also have to hand Tyrese Maxey a long-term extension. If they do both, they will essentially have their two biggest superstars locked in.
But it could also hamper them down the stretch if Joel Embiid‘s injuries hamper him. No team will be willing to take on an injury-prone big man with that massive a salary. But if he can stay healthy, their NBA title window stays open.
Fans not convinced on contract extension for Joel Embiid
Fans believe that the big man has too many question marks surrounding his ability to lead a team. Either he gets injured, or he does not show up in the playoffs. One more question mark that surrounds him is that he draws a lot of fouls in the regular season. Something that is scarce in the playoffs. So, his effectiveness will be a question mark down the stretch.
They took to social media to talk about this possible extension. Check out some of those reactions below:
If Joel Embiid can stay healthy and adjust his game to help the Philadelphia 76ers win an NBA title, then this contract extension will be well worth it. But NBA fans are not convinced at this moment. Especially from what they have seen transpire over the years.
