89 Multi-Purpose Stadiums Approved by Odisha Government to Boost Sports Productivity

Following the Tokyo Olympics, the Odisha government has approved the construction of 89 multi-purpose stadiums on Monday. The stadiums will be built within the next 18 months and hope to boost productivity in sports throughout the state.
The project was taken up in a bid to transform the sports field in Odisha, said a release on Monday. The stadiums will allow for professional coaching to take place right from the very beginning, finding and nurturing talent. The indoor multi-purpose stadiums will all be built in urban local bodies like Bhubaneshwar, Cuttak and Rourkela where such facilities are currently not available.
This improvement will promote sports, health and fitness all over the state. The centres will also act as disaster shelters during floods, cyclones etc, and as field hospital in case of emergencies. “This will provide a major boost to the development of sports in the state,” said sports and youth services minister Tusharkanti Behera to KalingaTV.
“Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) areas act as main centres for the sports related activities including coaching. The project is proposed for ensuring provision of quality sports infrastructure across ULBs of the state.“
The Stadiums will be built with a cost estimate of Rs 693.35 crores approved by the Odisha Government
The 89 Multi purpose stadiums that are to be built will have an estimated cost of Rs. 693.35 crores, which has been approved by the Odisha Government. The state cabinet headed by Naveen Patnaik approved the proposal on Monday. The stadiums come under the ‘urban sports infrastructure development project’ and will be completed over a span of 18 months.
These facilities will allow Badminton, Table Tennis, Yoga, Gymnasium, etc. to be played, and indoor stadiums can be converted in the future according to popularity of sports. The stadiums will be called Biju Patnaik Indoor Stadium and will come up at three municipal corporations (Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Rourkela), 30 municipalities and 52 NACs.
