Roberto Firmino’s thunderous header ensures that Liverpool deservedly run away with three points at Anfield

The unbeaten run at Anfield continues as it is stretched to 66 now with only 20 required to equal the record set by Chelsea. Liverpool knew that it would be a tragic if Jose Mourinho was the man to destroy their home record and ensured that it didn’t happen. Advantage to Liverpool as the Reds go into the business end of December with a healthy 3 point lead.
Never doubt Bobby Firmino, Never doubt Liverpool
Roberto Firmino has scored against Tottenham consistently over the last two years except for the one time in 2019 when Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah scored. When it would seem that Liverpool had to settle for a point at Anfield, Toby Alderweireld and Harry Kane both had a brain fade. Both of them allowed Firmino to be unmarked for one second and that was all it took as he raced forward and powered a header to the top right corner.
Liverpool started brightly and Jose Mourinho had set up Tottenham to sit back and absorb everything thrown at them. Perhaps this was the reason why they lost as Liverpool didn’t have to deal with pressure from their opponents. They kept pummelling Tottenham until they broke as Mohamed Salah took a shot that was heavily deflected by Toby Alderweireld and into the net. Son Heung-Min scored almost immediately as a trademark counter-attack was finished with the ball in the net.
However this was another controversial call by VAR as Son seemed offside by margins and no thorough checks were taken. Whenever it is Liverpool in this position, more than 5 minutes and tons of imaginary lines are drawn to deem a player offside, but no such thorough check was undertaken here. Nevertheless the first half ended on equal terms as Tottenham by far was the luckier team as Mohamed Salah, Curtis Jones, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all had their shots saved by Hugo Lloris.
Tottenham must regret their missed chances
Tottenham started the second half in better fashion and could’ve been leading 4-1 via Steven Bergwijn and Harry Kane. The former missed two glorious opportunities to curl the ball into the net and hit the post once while the latter missed a header from close range. Liverpool ended up punishing these misses as Andy Robertson swung a beautiful pass from a corner kick and Firmino rose higher than anyone to put the ball in the net. He capped off the beautiful goal by running to the other side of the pitch and celebrated in front of the Kop.
It was a beautiful show of love as whenever the fans sang Si Senor at the top of their lungs, Roberto Firmino was a different animal. Today the song rose to higher decibels as he celebrated with the Kop and was mobbed by all his teammates. You cannot see Mohamed Salah grinning wider than that as he hugged Firmino!
It was a brilliant night for Liverpool fans all over the world as their unbeaten home record was preserved and a 3 point lead was obtained.
