Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian clarifies his stance on investment in women sports amidst allegations of racist interest

Serena William‘s husband Alexis Ohanian is a world-renowned Entrepreneur and investor. Of late he has been in the news for investing in women’s sports. Ohanian is the co-founder of and major investor of a women’s soccer club based in Los Angeles called Angel City FC. It is a part of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

One question Ohanian is sick of hearing is whether his interest in women’s sports especially soccer is because he has a Black daughter and a Black wife. Ohanian told in an interview, “One thing I don’t want people to hear is like, oh this dude has a black wife and black daughter and now he cares about these things”. Alexis Ohanian believes that one should not just be a spouse of a great sportsperson or have a daughter to have an interest in women’s sports. Women’s sports should be considered important irrespective of that.

Having played soccer for 9 years himself he is a fan of the sport and believes more money should be in-flow to promote women’s sports. “Because I don’t think you need to have these things(a daughter and a women sportstar at home) in order to care. You shouldn’t need to have a daughter to care about women’s sports.”, he told in an interview.

Once in an interview with Forbes he had said “Women’s soccer, in particular, I believed was tremendously under-resourced, under-marketed, undervalued, underappreciated, under-supported, the list goes on,”. In 2022, Ohanian received the Women’s Sports Foundation 2022 Champion For Equality Award.

Though he said his daughter is not a reason for him to invest in the football cub, she definitely is an inspiration. He says his pace of investment might have been a lot slower if not for his wife and daughter. When asked if his daughter inspires him. “yes, it [Serena Williams and Olympia’s presence] absolutely played a huge role in helping build my perspective.”

Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian tied the knot in November 2017, 2 months after their daughter Olympia was born. Other than women’s sports, Ohanian is a big advocate of long Paternity leaves. He is also a staunch Open Internet Activist and Stop Piracy Act.
