Ajinkya Rahane fielded questions at the press ahead of India‘s all-important second Test match against England. After losing the first Test by a huge margin, questions have started to arise regarding India’s team combination and selection as well as the captaincy of Virat Kohli. Ever since vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane secured a famous series win in Australia, debates have cropped up about who India’s Test captain should be.

Having said that, Rahane’s form is in itself a cause for worry. In the first Test, he scored a total of just 1 run across both innings. He got out playing a needless attacking shot in the first innings off a full-toss from Dom Bess while in the second innings, he was outdone by a reverse-swinging delivery from James Anderson. Rahane will thus, want to bounce back and make a statement in the second Test as well.

Ajinkya Rahane was asked about the captaincy debate and the body language of the players on the field during the first Test during a virtual press conference and he said, “It is not always possible to have the same sort of energy on the field. The lack of energy sometimes on the field in the first Test was not due to the captain getting changed. Virat Kohli is and will continue to be my captain. Kuch masala nahi milega yahan (You won’t get any controversy here). The body language might also be because of how wicket behaved in the first two days of the opening Test. Virat is our captain, he will be our captain.”

Further, it is noteworthy that Rahane had discussed the same issue after the tour of Australia and said, “Virat (Kohli) is the captain. He left from Australia for family reasons that is why I became the captain. Originally Virat is the captain and I am the vice-captain. So I am really happy that he is back with us. Which is really positive. As a team, we are trying to play as a unit and together as well as to our strengths. My job is to take a backseat and then help out Virat whenever required, whenever he asks me for certain things I will help him.”
