Doc Rivers, who was recently let go as the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, had been appointed an analyst by ESPN. Many congratulated him and wished him luck for his newfound role and job, but there was one video and comment that stood out, which was from someone whom he had coached in his earlier days: Kevin Garnett.
Talking about Rivers, his former coach at the Celtics, Garnett said, “Congratulations to Doc, getting his new venture at ESPN… He has great insight for the game, he has great knowledge of not just the history, but schemes.” Garnett praised his former coach’s insight into the game and said he can give insights like none other. He said Rivers would be a great addition to ESPN’s team.
Garnett continued, “He’s a true, true coach and a true player. He has the understanding of both and how both worlds work. I think he did a great job as a coach understand players, and I think when he goes to articulate the game, I think fans are gonna find it encouraging.” This goes on to show how much Garnett respects Rivers as a coach.
Why was Doc Rivers fired from the 76ers?

Since the 76ers lost to the Celtics in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, talks were on regarding whether the coaches and the management staff should be let go. Even with the superstar duo of James Harden and Joel Embiid under his belt, Rivers could not make an impact. Ever since his time at the coaching bay, he had blown off three 3-1 leads, four 3-2 leads, one 2-0 lead, and has lost Game 7 at home four times. His game seven records, too, is not something to be proud of as he has lost ten out of the 16 games played.
Even though he won a ring with the Celtics in 2008, he couldn’t help the 76ers win a title even after having the duo of Embiid and Harden for the three seasons he coached them. Many supported the 76ers’ decision to kick him out. Still, some speculated that Harden was behind all of it. According to ESPN Analyst Ramona Shelbourne, Harden did not want to play under Rivers, which pressured the management to decide.
Even after all of this, Harden, too now, is on his way out of the organization as he is getting himself involved in constant back and forth with the organization. Doc Rivers, though, will lead a happy life as he will be close to the game and will play a role similar to the coach – analyzing games – just off-court from this season.
