Coco Gauff defeated Caroline Wozniacki in a three-set thriller, advancing to the quarter-final at Flushing Meadows. But in the heat of the match, the home hero snapped at her coach Brad Gilbert, when he was offering some advice against the Dane.
“Please just stop,” Gauff told her coach when he offered advice to the American when she was 5-3 down against Wozniacki. When asked in the on-court interview about the dynamics in her box, she was quick to reply. She said, “Sometimes I tell my coaches to chill a little bit because I like to figure things out for myself. Sometimes it is a stress reaction,” justifying her snapping at the coach. Gauff’s coach, the former World No.4, was not happy with Gauff’s reaction to his coaching.
Later in a press conference, she revealed that Gilbert was quite a “quirky” person. She admitted that she was a bit apprehensive about being paired up with a quite older coach. But she also joked that though he might be old, he was definitely a “10-year-old kid” at heart. “The guy has offered me jolly ranchers. My favorite Brad story is that he played pretty much every match with a jolly rancher in his mouth, “ she said.
Gauff also revealed playfully that Gilbert wakes up at three in the morning and that he sends her playlists of 60s and 70s bands. The American apparently has another agenda in her mind apart from winning at home. She seems to be buttering up her coach after the incident at the fourth-round match.
Coco Gauff advances to the quarter final at Flushing Meadows

Gauff defeats former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the fourth round of the US Open championship. She will face 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the quarter-final.
The 19-year-old is currently playing her best tennis. She entered the US Open draw, barely after soaking in her title at Cincinnati. While she made the final in the 2021 US Open, she was knocked out in the first round the following year. But in 2023, she is proving that she can indeed be a champion here.
Jelena Ostapenko, however, is entering the quarter-final just after defeating World No.1 and defending champ Iga Swiatek. She has had better success at Grand Slam titles compared to her quarter-final foe, with her winning the title at the 2017 Roland Garros. Both players will hope to give their best and emerge on top.
