IPL 2021 Auctions: RCB reveal behind the scenes footage of how they plotted Glenn Maxwell bid

Glenn Maxwell

Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday released the video footage of how they planned the bidding of Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell in their in the auction for the Indian Premier League 2021. Notably, RCB shelled out Rs 14.25 crore at the IPL 2021 Auction to secure the services of Glenn Maxwell.
RCB took to their official Twitter handle to share the video and captioned it, ”Bold Diaries: IPL Mock Auction Planning for Glenn Maxwell. The strategy and planning that led to RCB getting The Big show, Glenn Maxwell, into our #ClassOf2021. #PlayBold #WeAreChallengers #IPLAuction2021 #BidForBold.”
Mike Hesson plots Glenn Maxwell’s acquisition
Mike Hesson can be seen predicting RCB’s battle with Chennai Super Kings while preparing for the IPL 2021 Auctions. RCB’s Director of Cricket Operations expected CSK to challenge them financially when it came to Glenn Maxwell. Hesson’s prediction proved to be right on auction day, with CSK and RCB fighting tooth and nail in their pursuit of securing Glenn Maxwell. The two franchises got into a bidding war post the Rs 4.40 crore mark, with both RCB and CSK keen on signing Maxwell. It was RCB who ultimately held their nerve, getting Glenn Maxwell after CSK refused to bid post the Rs 14 crore mark.
“The reason why we like him is that he’s the most dangerous in overs 10-15. Since 2014 in the middle overs, his average is 28 with a strike rate of 161.5. That would do us beautifully,” Hesson said in the video. “And he can be a bowling option. We need somebody in that top 6 that can bowl 3-4 overs, but Maxwell can bowl two. Those numbers are exceptional,” Hesson added.
Despite his flop show in IPL 2020 for Kings XI Punjab, Maxwell was expected to trigger a bidding war at the IPL 2021 auction owing to his skills and international pedigree. Maxwell had a woeful season for KXIP last year where he managed only 108 runs and 3 wickets in 13 matches. He was subsequently released ahead of the IPL auction last week. Maxwell has not quite managed to fire in the IPL in the past few seasons and will be under pressure once again to justify his price tag after being roped in for a huge amount. Maxwell has so far played 82 IPL matches where he has amassed 1505 runs and picked up 18 wickets.
