With her latest win at the WTA Finals event in Cancun, Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek has created history. The 22-year-old broke several records as she ousted World No. 5 Jessica Pegula in the final round. She is the youngest WTA Finals champion since Petra Kvitova won in Istanbul in 2011.

With the WTA Finals, a Grand Slam, and three WTA titles under her belt in 2023, Swiatek has become only the third player after Petra Kvitova in 2011 and Serena Williams to achieve this feat. She is the youngest WTA Finals champion since Petra Kvitova won in Istanbul in 2011. Prior to this, she claimed the title at the China Open in Beijing, where she beat Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in the finals.

In the past week, the 22-year-old tallied wins against three reigning major champions, posting straight-set victories over Australian Open champion Sabalenka, US Open champion Coco Gauff, and Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.

The player was in impressive form, as she gave just one opportunity to the American to convert a breakpoint. Pegula, however, missed her chance. The Polish tennis sensation dominated the last match, winning all but one game against her opponent.

With her victory, Swiatek has also reclaimed her top seed ranking from Aryna Sabalenka to end her second consecutive year as World No. 1. The 22-year-old also broke 23-time Grand Slam title winner Serena Williams’ record of 32 sets in 2012 by conceding only 20 games to win the tournament in Cancun.

Iga Swiatek is only the second Polish champion at the WTA’s season-ending finals. Before her, Agnieszka Radwanska had won the title in Singapore back in 2015. Following her win, Swiatek thanked her family as well as her team for their support.

Prize money for Iga Swiatek and other players at the WTA Finals

The 22-year-old champion will receive a whopping $3,078,000 for winning the 2023 WTA Finals in Cancun. The runner-up, Jessica Pegula, will be awarded a check of $1,602,000 despite her loss in the last round of the event. The other two semi-finalists, US Open champion Coco Gauff and Belarusian tennis pro Aryna Sabalenka, will receive $648,000 each.

The total ‘prize money pool’ available at the season-ending Finals of 2023 is $9 million, which is the largest prize pool in the history of the tournament. Going down the order, the third-place holders, seeded at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, both Elena Rybakina and Tunisian ace Ons Jabeur, will receive $396,000.

Although the seventh seed, Marketa Vondrousova, and eighth seed, Maria Sakkari, lost all their matches in the robin round itself, the two will receive a participation fee of $198,000. The winners in the doubles category of the event, Vera Zvonareva and Laura Siegemund, will win $612,000 in prize money. The runner-ups, on the other hand, would earn $315,000 each.
