Iga Swiatek‘s quest for an Olympic medal has hit a roadblock as her mixed doubles partner Hubert Hurkacz was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injury. Hurkacz confirmed the same through an Instagram story.
There was uncertainty regarding Hurkacz’s Olympic participation after he suffered a knee injury during his second-round match against Arthur Fils in Wimbledon (Hurkacz gave the walkover to Fils). Hurkacz then underwent surgery and was doing everything to be fit for The Games, but unfortunately his current condition won’t allow him to represent Poland in the prestigious quadrennial tournament.
This is a very, very difficult decision because I have always dreamed of representing Poland at the Olympics, being able to win a medal for the national team, but unfortunately, my health does not allow it this year.Hubert Hurkacz said
Swiatek, who is a four-time Roland Garros champion, was eyeing two more titles on the clay courts of Paris but Hurkacz’s withdrawal means she will have just one chance to bring home the medal. The 23-year-old last won a title on the WTA Tour at Roland Garros this year by beating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in straight sets in the final. She has dominated at Roland Garros since lifting her first trophy in 2020 and will play in the Olympics as the top seed.
Iga Swiatek will be participating in her second Olympics
Iga Swiatek made her Olympics debut in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and progressed to just the second round where Spain’s Paula Badosa knocked her out. Although the World No.1 will feature in her second Olympics in Paris, her father Tomasz Swiatek has represented his country in The Games as he finished seventh in the men’s Quadruple Sculls rowing event in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. And because of this, Swiatek considers the Olympics the most important tournament.

Because of that, I know that the Olympics are the most important event probably in sports overall. Winning any medal would be a dream come true.Iga Swiatek said ahead of this year’s French Open
Clinching the Olympic gold will further solidify her status as a force to be reckoned with on the red dirt. The five-time Grand Slam champion last played at Wimbledon and, unlike her successful French Open campaign, she was beaten in the third round by Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in three sets.
