It never occurred to anyone that Darius Slay and Jalen Hurts perhaps didn’t harbor the smoothest relationship when they were teammates at the Philadelphia Eagles. After a five-year stay and a Super Bowl victory, the Eagles released Slay to look for a new home.

This allowed the 34-year-old defensive back to speak his mind. A video surfaced, shared by an Eagles fan, Tom Stakes, revealing Slay choosing the elite quarterbacks in the league.

Instead of picking his former quarterback, Jalen Hurts, Slay chose three quarterbacks: Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen. Aside from three-time Lombardi winner Patrick Mahomes, these quarterbacks have never won a Super Bowl.

The elite go to the top four guys. That’s how I do elites. And like elite for me is a quarterback world is Joe Burrow, [Patrick] Mahomes, Lamar [Jackson], and Josh Allen. They are the elites.

The video provided an idea that Slay doesn’t count Hurts among the elite quarterbacks of the NFL despite winning a Super Bowl. Dallas Cowboys pass rusher Micah Parsons gave the best reaction to the video.

It’s kind of surprising to hear Slay leaving out Hurts considering the 26-year-old played an important part in the Eagles winning Super Bowl LIX. His 221 yards, two touchdowns, and additional 72 yards and one score on the ground were crucial to the Eagles’ victory.

Darius Slay may have just closed the door on returning to the Eagles

Before the Eagles released Slay, they considered him among the top voices in the locker room. There were talks of bringing him back if they failed to find a suitable replacement in the free agency.

After the release, Slay on his podcast revealed that he had no hard feelings on the matter.

We’ll see how the Eagles do. If the Eagles do something nice, they know I’d love to be back. They know that, and I understand how this game is. Teams get younger. Teams want to save cap space because they pay younger guys for their future. And that’s why I said there are no hard feelings.

However, Slay’s uncharacteristic statement against Hurts may have squandered his ticket back to Lincoln Financial Field for another rodeo. On top of it, the Eagles found suitable replacements in Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean; hence, they felt comfortable letting the 6x Pro Bowler leave.

There are still doubts on whether Slay would even continue playing next season, let alone find a new team. First he needs to make up his mind on whether he wants to continue at 35, and if he does, there will be no shortage of teams who want veteran presence in their locker room.
