Former Dallas Mavericks executive roasts theory about why Mark Cuban sold team to Adelson family
Renowned Dallas voice Bill Simmons made his opinions clear on former Mavs majority owner Mark Cuban via his socials.

Luka Doncic and Mark Cuban
Mark Cuban served as the Dallas Mavericks’ public face for twenty years. Despite having sold the team to the Adelson family in 2023, Cuban has recently made headlines again for denouncing the new ownership group’s unethical move of franchise star Luka Doncic to Los Angeles.
A fan of The Bill Simmons podcast has his own different theory when it comes to Cuban. Per Front Office Sports, Cuban revealed recently that he ‘lost millions’ while he was the owner of the Mavs. In addition, the Bill Simmons fan believes that Cuban was forced to sell the Mavs because of ‘crypto losses.’ However, former Mavs executive Haralabos Voulgaris quickly put an end to this theory on X.
Forced to sell because of crypto losses is such an awful wild take. Cuban is quite conservative, some would say “nitty” i highly doubt he lost any significant $ in Crypto and certainly not enough that forced him to sell a ~3.5B asset that he wanted to retain control over. He could have sold 20-30% of the team while maintaining control, he could have borrowed against the asset if he needed to sell to cover losses. He’d have to bought at the stone cold top and even then it doesn’t make sense. The price of BTC was around 37k when he sold the team.

He…
Despite the Mavs owning the American Airlines Center and having a young core led by Doncic, Cuban not only sold the team for $4.8 billion ($1.3 billion less than the Boston Celtics just sold for) but also broke his own pledge to continue working as a basketball operations executive after the sale. Notably, Cuban does not participate in decision-making, but he still owns roughly 25% of the team.
In 2025, as Dallas mourns the loss of a championship-caliber squad and one of the greatest player tenures in Mavericks history, Cuban is attempting to portray himself as the good man to the franchise’s devoted supporters. This especially did not sit well with Simmons who slandered him on a segment of his self-titled podcast show.
Bill Simmons ‘blasted’ Mark Cuban for his behavior after the Luka Doncic trade
Following the Luka Doncic trade, the Dallas Mavericks continue to be getting a lot of heat. Mark Cuban, who is currently a minority stakeholder, has addressed the matter and his involvement in several media appearances, asserting that he had no say in the choices made. However, Bill Simmons is taking none of this B.S. and called him out on his podcast.
Now he’s trying to distance himself desperately from the Luka trade and he’ll do any interview and talk about how he can’t believe…You did sell the team to these dudes; this is your fault… I thought you loved the Mavericks, I thought you loved the fans, I thought you loved Luka.
Bill Simmons said
No one within the organization would block the Doncic deal since Cuban would not be involved in day-to-day basketball operations. Simmons, however, feels that he ought to have prevented the Mavericks from reaching that stage.
Given that it doesn’t appear that the new team is going to capture a championship in the next two years, the decision made by the new ownership has caused a rift with the supporters that will be difficult to heal.
Mark Cuban recently made his thoughts clear on the Luka Doncic trade alongside Microsoft owner Bill Gates
Last month, the basketball world went into a frenzy when the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers agreed to trade star guard Luka Doncic for big man Anthony Davis. Another person who was left ‘stunned’ by this trade was former Mavs’ majority owner, Mark Cuban. He recently opened up on this besides Microsoft owner Bill Gates during an event.
I gotta tell you (Bill Gates), I’ve had a rough week… If after you left Microsoft, you found out that Steve Ballmer traded Windows 11 — like, the new hot operating system — for Windows 10, the Hall-of-Fame but older operating system, what would you do?

For Cuban, Doncic was far more than just a star who changed franchises. He thought he was better than the great Mavericks player Dirk Nowitzki in terms of skill. When he was at Real Madrid, the former Mavs owner fell in awe of him.
Unlucky for him, Cuban was not in charge of the ‘operational’ decisions during this trade deal. However, the former Mavs owner did make his opinions clear stating that ‘ he would not have allowed’ this to happen if he were in charge of the Mavs.
