Mirra Andreeva is back at the Madrid Open, where she reached the Round of 16 two seasons ago at just 15. The Russian teenager has been far from being overwhelmed by expectations and has continued her step-by-step growth in the WTA. She now feels a deeper responsibility for herself as she nears her 18th birthday.

Two years ago, no one would have thought Andreeva would become a top player in the women’s circuit this early. The 17-year-old currently sits as World No.7 in the WTA rankings, and she’s the youngest to enter the Top 10 in 18 years. In fact, she’s the youngest of three teenagers in the Top 100, which includes Alexandra Eala, who is ranked No.72.

It has always been a typical problem with teenagers for several years as they often lack the strength and power to compete with their older colleagues. But Andreeva has been completely different. She has fully blossomed and, in 2025, has already won two WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells.

She’ll turn 18 in a week and already has her eyes set on achieving greater feats on the court. She revealed after the opening match in Madrid that she’s starting to take more responsibility for herself.

I’m starting to understand that I’ll have to take responsibility for myself, but I don’t think much will change. I’ll remain the same, I just won’t be a little kid anymore. No one will coddle me, although my parents will, of course. However, I realize that my youth is over.

We worked hard during the preseason on my serve, jumping more, being more active with my legs, quicker with arm movements. These are small details, and today, I was really impressed with my serve. When I was younger, it was harder for me because I was shorter and not a great server.

A lot of people say a lot of things and sometimes there are thoughts that are crawling into your head and you sometimes start to overthink. I’ve experienced that and I have a great team around me. I also share my feelings and everyone is trying to help me.
