Shedeur Sanders mentally prepared himself to play for the New York Giants leading up to the draft. Brian Daboll, Joe Schoen, and several Giants executives kept tabs on the 23-year-old quarterback.

They watched games, spoke with him at the NFL Scouting Combine, and even flew him in for a private workout days before the draft in Green Bay. Former NFL MVP Cam Newton explained why New York is the perfect place for a Sanders.

New York presents a bigger pool for the Sanders name. What would that look like? And if we’re talking about business alone and opportunity alone. This is not even about Deion, more or less than about Shedeur, right? I think Shedeur has him written all over it as a New York Giant.

Coach Prime Deion Sanders was on board with his son taking over the mantle from Eli Manning.

The draft day can be very cruel for some. As for Sanders, it was agonizing to see the Giants taking Abdul Carter and Jaxson Dart over him. It continued for the next two days.

One by one, the Giants selected a total of eight players, but none of them had Shedeur in their name.

A day before day one of the draft, the football world received eye-opening news from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Pelissero revealed a few NFL teams were displeased by Shedeur Sanders’ attitude.

The worst formal interview I’ve ever been in in my life. He’s so entitled. He takes unnecessary sacks. He never plays on time. He has horrible body language. He blames teammates, but the biggest thing is, he’s not that good.

The Ringer’s Todd McShay, in his podcast, hinted that the Giants and Daboll are on one of the camps Pelissero spoke about.

I’ve read a couple of people’s Shedeur [Sanders] is in play at number three. Shedeur is not in play at three! Shedeur is not in play with the New York Giants, as far as I’m told. Shedeur didn’t have a great interview with Brian Daboll in a private visit. An install package came in, and the preparation wasn’t there for it. Got called out on it, didn’t like that. Brian didn’t appreciate him not liking it.

Daboll and Schoen instead drafted Ole Miss quarterback Dart after trading back up in the first round. Dart became the 25th overall player in the 2025 draft.

Later, the media asked Daboll about the McShay report. Daboll carefully maneuvered his way out of giving a clear answer.

We had good meetings with all the guys that came in here on 30 visits… We met with some quarterbacks down there. We met with a variety of people, and you’re able to get some guys ahead of, say, the combine and see them do some different things, and he did a nice job there with some of the things that they asked him to do. So, it’s a very helpful part of the process… [Those] meetings were productive, and we’re happy with [our quarterback] Jaxson [Dart].

Sanders’ time finally came on day 3. Like the Giants, the Cleveland Browns were another team heavily favored to select the FBS leader in pass completion (74%) in 2024. Prime Time even claimed on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast that either Shedeur or Travis Hunter would end up in Cleveland.

The Browns owned the second overall pick, which they traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hunter became the new wide receiver partner of Trevor Lawrence in Florida.

Browns Andrew Berry came back for Sanders in the fifth round. The Browns drafted Shedeur 144th overall. He will now compete with Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel for the final 53-man roster in the summer.
