Quinn Ewers, who sacrificed $8 million from NIL money to enter the draft, will get only $800,000 after being drafted in 7th round

Quinn Ewers achieved his NFL dream when the Dolphins drafted him in the seventh round, but his salary will be a fraction of what he earned through NIL deals in college.

Quinn Ewers has been an overachiever his entire life. He became one of the youngest quarterbacks ever drafted in the NFL at 22. However, the consensus around social media is that he should have stayed in college for one more year.

Ewers’ age isn’t exactly the reason behind fans wanting him back at the Texas Longhorns for another year. If he had played through the senior year, then he would have seen a hefty increase in his NIL earnings.

As per On3.com, Quinn Ewers’ current NIL valuation is $4.5 million. He could have seen that rise close to $8 million if he had played the 2025 college football season. Carson Beck is reaping the benefits by choosing to stay back in college and transfer to Miami.

This isn’t an uncharted territory for Ewers. He made the jump early at the high school level as well. UNC nearly gave him a scholarship to come and play for them when he was only in the seventh grade at Carroll Senior High in Southlake, Texas.

He wowed everyone by throwing over 4000 yards in his first year for his school and over 2400 in his injury-hit junior year. At the age of 16, he verbally committed to Texas before switching to join the Ohio State Buckeyes. The main reason behind the decision was the NIL amount.

One of the main things was that the Texas legislature wasn’t going to allow #txhsfb players to be paid. Me and my family had a pretty big opportunity in front of us, we felt like it was a good decision for me to forego my senior year and enroll early at Ohio State. I had the opportunity to have some good money in our pockets as a family.

He struck a good deal but soon realized playing time at the Buckeyes was a stretch even for a five-star talent like him. Current Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud led the line, followed by three others. Ewers was the fifth choice—fourth at best. He left after one year and returned to Texas, but had to wait two years before bagging the starting quarterback job.

Quinn Ewers’ possible contract at Miami Dolphins

Ewers, the same age as the Giants’ Jaxson Dart, was selected in the seventh round by the Miami Dolphins. He is going to a more favorable place than Shedeur Sanders.

The Dolphins currently have two quarterbacks on the roster. The $53 million per year Tua Tagovailoa and the recently signed journeyman Zach Wilson, who backed up Bo Nix at the Denver Broncos last year.

Now, the situation is favorable because of Tua’s choppy history with injuries. Tagovailoa has suffered multiple concussions in the last few seasons. In 2024, he missed six games, and two years before that, he only played 13.

Fans and former players have advised Tagovailoa to consider retirement the next time he suffers another one. Now nobody wants to see a good player down, but football is a rough sport, and injuries can happen anytime.

As for Wilson, he’s only in Miami for one year, and it’s anyone’s guess what will happen to him after that.

With Wilson most likely out of the way in 2026, Ewers will become the number two in Miami behind Tagovailoa. According to his introductory press conference as a Dolphins player, Ewers revealed his familiarity with the playbook run by Mike McDaniel.

We run some of the same concepts, and I know Sark [Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian] went down and talked to [coach] Mike in the offseason. I’m beyond excited and grateful for the opportunity that the Dolphins have given me.

Ewers will not earn the same amount as in college. Spotrac (H/T: USA Today) predicted that Quinn Ewers is likely to sign a four-year, $4.31 million ($800,000 per year) contract with no fifth-year option, as he’s a seventh-round pick.
