There were notable absentees in the Philadelphia Eagles contingent that visited the White House to meet with Donald Trump on Monday. Saquon Barkley, on the other hand, was seen hanging out with the President of the United States of America a day earlier.

Barkley faced a lot of heat for being too familiar with Trump. The 78-year-old may be the leader of the free world, but he’s not exactly high on the well-liked list among the Philadelphia natives.

The Super Bowl winner had no other option but to address the hate directed at him from the Eagles fans.

Lol some people are really upset cause I played (golf) and flew to the White House with the PRESIDENT. Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand. Just golfed with Obama not too long ago … and look forward to finishing my round with Trump! Now ya get out my mentions with all this politics and have amazing day.

Saquon Barkley tweeted as his response

The following day, the star running back, along with head coach Nick Sirianni, Cooper DeJean, and the Eagles’ head of security, ‘Big Dom’ DiSandro, handed the Lombardi Trophy to Trump as a sign of respect.

Trump recognized DiSandro instantly and thanked him for doing a great job for the franchise.

We also have to recognize the Eagles’ head of security. Now this is a guy, they say he loves Trump. I had Saquon [Barkley] give him a big beautiful hat last night, because I’ve been hearing about this guy. He likes Trump. His name is Dominic DiSandro, Big Dom. And he’s sort of a legend.

After giving a shout-out to Big Dom, Trump switched his attention to Barkley. And he had a big story to tell.

Donald Trump claimed he wanted Saquon Barkley to stay at the New York Giants

Shedeur Sanders may be the talk of this year’s offseason, but last year it was all about Barkley. Around this time, the 28-year-old ditched the team that drafted him and signed for their rivals.

The New York Giants drafted Barkley second overall in 2018. His rookie contract ended in 2023, and the Giants placed a nonexclusive franchise tag. It forced him to play on tag money for one year.

The following year, the Giants faced the same issue. However, this time they released the Penn State graduate. And to their surprise, Barkley signed for the Eagles. The move created a social media meltdown. Fans and former players were up in arms against him for joining a divisional rival.

Trump claimed that he asked the Giants’ head coach, Brian Daboll, to prevent Barkley from leaving New York.

I was with the Giants and the head coach and some people, and I said…don’t lose Saquon. They lost Saquon. That was not good. I called that one.

Donald Trump revealed

This revelation came as a surprise to everyone. No one had spoken a word about it for a year—not even Adam Schefter or Ian Rapoport.

However, Giants spokesperson Pat Hanlon told Front Office Sports that “there were no conversations” between Trump and the Giants about Barkley.

Hanlon later called out Trump on X.

With all due respect, stop yapping. Be the leader we all want you to be. And my 401K wants you to be. I’m trying to retire!!

Pat Hanlon tweeted

The Giants drew the short end of the stick. They finished the 2024 season with a 3-14 record. Meanwhile, Barkley was tearing up NFL defenses. He set the Eagles’ ball carry (345) and rushing yards (2005) record in his first year in Philly. The Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs to win their second-ever Super Bowl, and Barkley was chosen as the Offensive Player of the Year.
