 “The truth, whole truth and nothing but the truth,” is how LeBron James described Anthony Edwards to Barack Obama in the gold-winning Olympic basketball team documentary ‘Court of Gold’. It was a fairly accurate way to describe how the 23-year-old has ascended to the upper echelon of NBA stars.

Edwards has been playing inspired two-way basketball, elevating his game on both ends to superstar levels. The Timberwolves star has been the best player against James and Luka Doncic, leading to a 3-1 series lead. His composure and fourth quarter decision-making have been pivotal in the Wolves’ back-to-back home wins. Edwards has been a playmaker and a shot maker as and when needed for Minnesota.

NBA fans have grown to look past his off-court indiscretions given how he has elevated his game for two straight postseasons. However, they are embedded in internet lore for eternity – especially his paternity row with Ayesha Howard. Edwards paid 18 years of child support in a single installment to Howard after declining to be recognized as the legal father of a daughter that the two had recently.

His viral texts with Howard and other women have led people to meme his whole existence. Charleston White created a viral moment by showing his ardent fandom of the youngster’s approach to Howard. Speaking to streamers Zias and B.Lou on their live stream, the actor showered Edwards with some heady praise.

According to White, the ‘game’ displayed by Edwards was to remove himself from his daughter’s life completely. While this act was viewed in a negative light by the general public, White seems to believe that cutting ties with Howard was in Edwards’ best interest.

Much like Ja Morant and Zion Williamson before him, Edwards has been floated as a possible face of the NBA. All three of these youngsters have shown promise as possible franchise cornerstones for small-market teams. But it is clear after this season that Edwards in a different tier to the two players from the 2019 NBA draft. Edwards is about to add Doncic and James to Kevin Durant and Nikola Jokic among his playoff victims.

The Timberwolves will then likely go up against Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler and the Warriors in the semifinals. If they can beat them, they will then face MVP favorite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the 68-win OKC Thunder. SGA is yet another player vying for the honor of being the face of the NBA, building a rabid fanbase of his own.

Edwards’ game is perhaps the most exciting to watch – Magic Johnson certainly thinks so! He has 100th percentile explosiveness, athleticism and speed and is not afraid to flex it whenever he can. After spending an offseason shooting against Curry in Olympics drills, Edwards is also the NBA’s leading 3-point shooter by volume in 2024-25. It is clear that the sky is the limit for this impressive youngster on the court.
