Iga Swiatek has scheduled a blockbuster clash with Coco Gauff in the semifinal of the Madrid Open. The match will be their second encounter in the season.

Swiatek survived a scare against Madison Keys in her previous round as she was surprisingly handed a bagel in the first set by the American. But Swiatek made an emphatic comeback, restricting Keys to just five games in the two sets, booking a spot in the semifinals with a 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.

Gauff, on the other hand, went past reigning Indian Wells champion Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-1. The winner of the semifinal will lock horns with Aryna Sabalenka or Elina Svitolina.

Iga Swiatek vs. Coco Gauff: Match Preview

Iga Swiatek arrived in Madrid following her defeat to Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals of the Stuttgart Open. Before the Madrid Open, Swiatek participated in six singles tournaments, failing to reach a final. Swiatek in fact last reached a final and won a title at the 2024 Roland Garros, where she lifted her fourth title in the event and her third consecutive one by beating Jasmine Paolini in straight sets.

Prior to beating Keys in the quarterfinals, the Pole went past Alexandra Eala, Linda Noskova, and Diana Shnaider. Except for her match against Noskova, Swiatek registered all her victories in three sets.

Coco Gauff, on the other hand, last lifted a title at the 2024 WTA Finals by beating Qinwen Zheng. The 2023 US Open champion, like Swiatek, was defeated in the Stuttgart Open quarterfinals. Before knocking out Mirra Andreeva, the American went past Dayana Yastremska, Ann Li, and Belinda Bencic.

Gauff kickstarted her campaign for the season in an emphatic fashion, helping Team USA win the United Cup. But since her defeat to Paula Badosa in the Australian Open quarterfinal, the 21-year-old lost her next five tournaments without winning more than two matches before breaking that streak at the Madrid Open.

Iga Swiatek vs. Coco Gauff: Match Prediction

Swiatek has met Gauff 14 times on the tour. But only thrice Gauff was able to register victories against the five-time Grand Slam champion.

The upcoming match will be their second encounter on the tour this season, following the United Cup final which Gauff had won in straight sets. It was Gauff’s second consecutive victory over Swiatek, following their clash in the round-robin stage of the 2024 WTA Finals.

The defending champion, who lifted her first title in the Spanish capital last year by beating Aryna Sabalenka in the final, is the winner of 22 titles, 10 of which she clinched on clay. Gauff, on the other hand, has lifted nine singles titles but only once she emerged victorious on clay: at the 2021 Emilia-Romagna Open. Gauff is also a French Open finalist, reaching the summit clash in 2022 but lost the title to Swiatek in straight sets.

The match will also be their sixth encounter on clay. Gauff was never successful against the World No.1 in those matches on the red dirt. So Swiatek will be the favorite to win this match as well as the final to end her trophy drought.

Match Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in three sets.
